5 Underrated Attractions You Cannot Miss in Siem Reap – Discovering Cambodia

Siem Reap is not just about Angkor Wat, there are many other fascinating places to visit in this city. Here are five underrated attractions that you shouldn't miss when in Siem Reap.

1

West Baray

First on the list is West Baray Lake. This reservoir, known as the "Clear Water Reservoir" in Khmer, is the largest of its kind built during the height of the Angkor era. With a length of 7.8km and a width of 2.1km, it has a holding capacity of at least 53 million liters of water. The lake is a popular day trip destination for Cambodians who enjoy swimming and relaxing amidst the jungle. Visitors can also visit the West Mebon temple located in the center of the lake. During the dry season, visitors can walk to the temple, but during the monsoon season, a boat is required. Staying at places like the FCC Angkor can be an excellent option for those looking for accommodation.

2

Cambodian Landmine Museum

The Cambodian Landmine Museum is another attraction worth visiting. Unfortunately, Cambodia has one of the highest rates of landmines in the world. This museum located 25 km south of Siem Reap, close to Banteay Srey Temple, provides a glimpse into the impact of landmines on Cambodia and what has been done to clear them. Visitors can also donate to the Landmine Relief Fund to help the victims of landmines.

3

Artisans Angkor

Artisans Angkor is a Siem Reap-based organisation that trains and helps the country's skilled artisans. The organization provides high-quality training in traditional Cambodian craftwork such as earthenware, jewellery, ceramics, wood, stone carvings, silver platings, and lacquerware. Visitors can tour the workshops for free and witness how the artisans create these masterpieces. By purchasing these products, visitors can support local and impoverished communities. The organisation is located near some of the top restaurants in Siem Reap.

4

Wat Preah Ang Sang Tuk

Wat Preah Ang Sang Tuk is a small Buddhist monastery located in Angkor Thom. This temple, close to Victory Gate and Vihear Prampil Loveng, has a rich history dating back to the Angkorian era. Visitors can explore the remnants of the temple, including a stone image of the Buddha and colourful frescoes depicting the teachings of Buddhism and the life of the Lord Buddha.

5

Floating Villages

Visiting the floating villages located on the Tonle Sap River is a great way to discover the exceptional lifestyle and culture of the Cambodians. This river stretches 25 km from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh and serves as a vital source of food for Cambodia. The villages offer a unique opportunity to experience the daily lives of the locals who have lived on the water for generations. A boat tour is an excellent way to explore the villages and witness the spectacular sunset while interacting with the friendly villagers. The floating villages represent a preserved way of life that is still an essential aspect of Cambodian culture. A visit to these villages is a cultural experience that should not be missed when in Siem Reap.
