What wildlife can I see in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka? - Exclusively for wildlife lovers

If you are wondering why Yala always comes first in recommendations for wildlife observations in Sri Lanka, that's because this spot has a wide variety of animal species for you. Ranging from mammals, and birds to reptiles, Yala is a heaven for those who love wildlife in its most natural form.

1

Sri Lankan leopard

As per what locals call it, this is 'Diviya'. (not exactly a tiger, but a leopard looks very similar to a tiger). Yala is a paradise for those who enjoy the sights of leopards because the leopard density is so high here. Yala has a lot of lowlands and scrubs in which they dwell, and if you take a safari, you may get the chance to see dozens of them during mornings and evenings.

2

Sri Lankan elephant

Yala is not the only place in Sri Lanka to spot elephants but of course one of the best! If you are spending a nice vacation at Cinnamon Wild Yala, this national park is located very close by, and one safari will make you cover at least 3 elephant observations. There are around 300 elephants dwelling here, and you may spot them in lagoons and watery areas at the national park.

3

Toque Macaque Monkey

Yala wildlife also contains some rare species such as the Toque Macaque Monkey. Locals call this species 'Rilawa' and this type of monkies is endemic to Sri Lanka. If you have watched the popular movie 'Monkey Kingdom' which was released in 2015, you get first-hand experience at Yala national park to observe its main roles with their loving families. You will love the way how they try to imitate people and other creatures around them, and this of course very funny!

4

Sri Lankan sloth bear

Sloth bears can also be spotted in India. These creatures have been included under the "vulnerable category" by the IUCN, and this is the very reason why the value of places such as Yala National Park has gone up quite significantly. Sri Lankan sloth bear normally eats insects, but they also like roots, nuts, and berries which can be freely found in Yala.

5

The birdlife

If you are fond of bird watching, Yala is a great spot for you. You get the chance to observe over 150 species of birds at this national park, and sometimes even more if you spend a lot of time here. In addition to the most beautiful and picturesque Sri Lankan Peacock, Yala is also home to birds such as Oriental Magpie, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Green Imperial, Blue Tailed Bee Eater, Indian Roller, and Spot-billed Pelican. Some of these bird species are endemic to Sri Lanka, while some are from other countries that are here for a seasonal stay.

6

Crocodiles and other reptiles

So, it's not just about the birds and mammals, Yala is also home to a good number of reptiles. Among all of them, crocodiles are the most popular because they are easily spotted at Yala. This national park also is home to many snakes, some of which can only be seen in Sri Lanka.
