5 Best Sidewalk Snacks You Must Try in Vietnam – Experience the best of Vietnam through its flavours

Asia has some of the best street food in the world, and Vietnam is no exception. Here are some must-try street food snacks to check out while you're there!

1

Mi Quang

Soups are extremely popular in Vietnam. This dish is known as the crowning achievement of Vietnamese street food. The broth is heartier, the rice noodles are thicker and doughier, and there is more variety in this soup as well. Mi Quang is originally from the central Vietnamese province of Quang Nam. Mi Quang is often served with an array of fresh herbs, vegetables, peanuts, and lime wedges on the side, which allows you to customise the flavours and textures to your liking.

2

Com Tam

This dish is extremely popular in Ho Chi Minh City, so much so, that it is said to be the signature dish of the city. The main component of this dish is broken rice. The texture of broken rice is similar to that of regular rice, but smaller. When served, com tam is usually topped with a variety of ingredients, such as grilled pork chops, fried eggs, shredded pork skin, and deep-fried fish patties. Sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, pickled vegetables, or dipping sauces are typically offered as side dishes.

3

Banh Cuon

Also known as steamed rice rolls, this delicacy is usually stuffed with pork and/or mushrooms. A fried shallot dip, sweet and sour fish sauce, assorted fresh herbs, and a lime-based sauce are typically served alongside the dish. These steamed rolls, which must always be incredibly thin and translucent, require a specific kind of ability to be prepared. In Vietnam, banh cuon is typically eaten for breakfast. A dish very similar to banh cuon is also found in Thai cuisine under the name khao phan! This goes to show similarities between these Asian cuisines.

4

Banh Beo

Popular Vietnamese steamed cake known as banh bèo is made with components such as rice flour, fish sauce with green chilli peppers, and either shrimp or pork. The cake's flavours can be enhanced by adding noodles, roasted peanuts, or fried onions. In addition to savoury cakes, there are also sweet varieties that are virtually only found in Hoi An. The traditional way to eat banh bèo is in a porcelain bowl with a bamboo spoon. The indentation in the centre, which is utilised to keep the delicious, savoury stuffings, is seen to be the most crucial aspect of a good bánh bèo. Some people refer to it as the Vietnamese equivalent of tapas. Many Quy Nhon restaurants offered by the likes of Anantara Quy Nhon Villas, usually have versions of this dish readily available.

5

Pho

If you want to taste a dish that truly embodies Vietnamese cuisine, then Pho should be at the top of your list. Pho will not disappoint! Pho takes time to make, but it is a simple dish much loved by everyone. Pho can be found almost anywhere in Vietnam because it really is that popular! A trip to Vietnam is incomplete without enjoying a steaming bowl of Pho.
