Best Things to Do in Muscat, Oman - Majestic Muscat Awaits You!

Lying in the Gulf of Oman, Muscat is on the southeastern extremity of the Arabian Peninsula. For visitors, Muscat serves as their initial encounter with the Sultanate of Oman, and it is advisable to extend their stay for a few days to discover the hidden gems that await them.

1

Shop at the Mutrah Souq

A favourite haunt for locals, foreigners and expatriates is the famed Mutrah Souq. You will encounter an intriguing labyrinth of miniature shops selling stuff like khanjars, Omani silver, traditional jewellery, pashminas, textiles, frankincense, knickknacks, old furniture, and elegantly engraved doors. The sheer diversity of goods is astounding, and you should devote a full morning or evening to discovering it. Bargaining is allowed, but note when it comes to the cost of silverware, prices change daily.

2

Climb the Mutrah Fort

Constructed in 1580 by the Portuguese back in 1580, the Mutrah Fort is an impressive structure. There are some 250 steps that you have to climb to reach its summit. As you ascend, there are several viewpoints with fantastic vistas overlooking the bay. Its sea, imposing rocky bays, and treacherous mountainous backdrop makes for a spectacular sight of Muscat. This incredible spot was utilised by the Portuguese to construct their fortifications and observation posts, giving rise to the creation of the Fort.

Capture some incredible photos at The Sultan's Palace

Once you pass along several bays from Mutrah mosque, you will find the vibrant Sultan's Palace, also called Al Alam Palace. It was Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, who assumed the reins following the demise of the beloved Sultan Qaboos bin Said. He had several such palaces around Oman, but this modern-looking palace dates back to 1972 and is the only palace viewable to the public — although its interiors remain off-limits for visitors. However, the site makes for some stunning pictures, bordered by dramatic Portuguese forts, and the location is an arresting sight for its visitors. If looking for accommodation, the likes of Al Falaj Hotel can be found less than 15 minutes away.

4

Be mesmerised by the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

A truly spectacular creation, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the Arabic world. Visiting this mosque is one of the best things to do in Oman. Five elegant minarets, symbolising the five tenets of Islam magnificently decorate the sky, while at its centrepiece is an enormous dome resembling golden mesh. The mosque can accommodate 15,000 devotees at any given time. Its sandstone architecture is awe-inspiring and every photographer's dream. The symmetry is executed to perfection from serene arches, gleaming marble walls and floors, sturdy colonnades and beautiful gardens.
