Borneo’s Best Beaches - A Guide to Exploring this Remote Island by Beach Hopping

While Borneo may be renowned for its ancient rainforests, rich biodiversity, and leading animal sanctuaries, its beaches are nothing short of amazing. The array of both accessible and secluded beaches scattered around this island truly adds to its charm.

1

Tanjung Aru

If you are staying at a property such as Travelodge Georgetown Penang, and planning a visit to Kota Kinabalu in Borneo, then you must visit the city’s most popular beach, Tanjung Aru. While you can spend the day swimming in the ocean or sunbathing, this beach is known for its spellbinding sunset, which draws tourists and locals alike. Every evening, this beach comes to life with local vendors selling mouthwatering street food and musicians playing lively tunes that add to this dynamic atmosphere.

2

Pulau Tiga

Are you wondering why the name ‘Pulau Tiga’ sounds so familiar? Well, it’s because the reality survival show “Survivor: Borneo” was set on this island. Although it no longer houses reality show contestants, this idyllic island, with its sandy beaches and mud pools, is a favourite among those looking for a weekend escape. For those accustomed to staying at a hotel in Georgetown, Penang, there are several equally opulent resorts on the island that offer a comparable level of luxury.

3

Mabul Beach

With its aquamarine water, we admit that the Mabul beach can leave anyone awestruck, but did you know that this beach is a cherished site among macro divers? It is unlikely to miss encountering marine life while diving, as the underwater world is abundant with various creatures ranging from frogfish and scorpionfish to cuttlefish. Even if you are not an experienced diver, you can still observe marine life while standing on the shore due to the translucent quality of the water.

4

Teluk Pandan Kecil Beach

The Teluk Pandan Kecil beach is hands down one of the most picturesque beaches you will come across in Borneo. In addition to the usual sandy shores and breathtaking water, this beach has various rock formations, with one sea stack even looking like a cobra head.

5

Sipadan Beach

Have you ever wanted to scuba dive with sharks? Well, if you have, look no further, because Sipadan offers one of the best diving experiences in the world. However, as there are no resorts located on this island, you will need to join a diving company if you want to visit this beach. But make sure to book in advance because only a limited number of permits are issued.

6

Kudat Beach

If you are more interested in visiting beaches off the beaten track, this remote destination would be ideal for you as this is a largely unspoilt beach. While you will need to travel approximately 200 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu to reach this beach, its laidback charm will capture your heart in no time at all. You will also get to interact with the individuals belonging to the Momogun Rungus ethnic group, which would be quite the experience as you can observe cultural performances as well as tempt your taste buds by trying out a new cuisine.
