You can travel around cheaply in the Maldives if you use public ferry rides. The schedules tend to be a bit erratic, but it costs less than 4 USD. Ferries however don't go to resort islands. You can go to Small Island on the ferry and ask a fisherman to drop you off at the resort. This will cost you less than a speedboat ride. Local dhoni rides are cheap but can be a tad uncomfortable. But, if you go up to the roof, you can distract yourself with dolphin spotting. Once you get to the resort, there is hardly any reason to leave it until it is time to head back home. Seaplane flights are the most expensive means of travel in the Maldives with speedboats coming up next.
