Five Memorable Things to Do in Hikkaduwa - The stunning sun, soft sand, and sensational sea

Sri Lanka is a country filled with many gems, and Hikkaduwa is undoubtedly one of them. Here are a few fun things to do when you're in the southern coast of the island.

1

Exploring the underwaters

No trip to the beachside is complete without a glimpse at the vast ocean life that lay underneath the sparkling blue waters, and the same rule applies in beautiful Hikkaduwa (Hikka, for short!). While the beaches look like they've been painted by the Gods, the underwater life will take your experience a notch or two higher. Brace yourself for the stunning fish and colourful, vibrant underwater life you'll witness as you snorkel the lukewarm waters of southern Sri Lanka. The best part about snorkelling? Just about anyone can do it! The best period for snorkelling in Hikkaduwa is between November to April. Don't worry about snorkelling gear, as many local tour operators will rent the equipment out to you for a small fee.

2

A river safari

There are numerous bodies of water in Sri Lanka, each with its own beauty and ecosystem. When you're in Hikkaduwa, find some time to go on a river safari. While the beaches are enjoyable enough, there's something about the calm, yet murky, waters of the river that is both exciting and mysterious. The Madhu River is the most popular option. Keep an eye out for various birds, fish and maybe a crocodile or two, sunbathing in the corners.

3

Go beach hopping

Since you're surrounded by beaches, make it a point to visit a few of them! Relaxing at one of the Hikkaduwa hotels the likes of Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon is a great way to start your holiday, and beach hopping is a great way to make it more exciting. Hikaduwa beach is, quite obviously, the most popular but the likes of Akurala beach, Narigama beach and Pitiwella beach offer a plethora of different landscapes and experiences. While you may have to travel a little bit to reach some of the aforementioned beaches, it's all worth it in the end.

4

Surfs up!

Watersports on the beach are as clear as day. In Hikkaduwa, the most popular water sport is surfing and you'll know why with a quick glimpse of the stunning waves! Continous swells and clean waves make Hikkaduwa a very tempting location for thirsty adventurers on the lookout for some surfing adventures. Hikkaduwa is also a great place for beginners. There are plenty of surfboard rental places that dot the side of the beach, so don't worry about any gear!

Release of baby turtles

Watching baby turtles being released into the ocean is a sight and experience to cherish. There are several local hatcheries in Hikkaduwa that you can visit, to understand more about turtles and what the hatcheries do in protecting them from predators. There is usually a small fee to visit the hatchery, and the activity of watching the turtles being released into the ocean is free and unforgettable! This activity usually occurs every evening.
