5 Stunning Beaches That You Simply Must Visit in Sri Lanka - For some splashing fun in the sun!

Sri Lankan beaches can be spectacular, but you can also bump into some overcrowded and polluted beaches, unfortunately. If you want the best of both worlds, try looking at this list for some inspiration. It also doesn't hurt to go on a beach hunt. You are bound to run into some unexplored gems.

1

Bentota beach

Sitting near the western coast, Bentota beach stretches south from the majestic Bentota lagoon. Tall coconut trees sway near the golden sand, while a fishing boat or two is always a common sight. The southern extremity of the Bentota coastline is lined with upscale resorts and boutique hotels. Bentota also happens to be quite the watersports hub. The calm, lagoon waters are just perfect for boating upriver, kayaking and jet-skiing. Situated halfway between Colombo and Galle, Bentota beach is a popular destination with day trippers from the capital city.

2

Hiriketiya

Located on the southern coastal belt, the region surrounding Dikwella is slowly evolving into a popular travellers destination. The more popular coastal towns like Mirissa and Unawatuna have seen a surge of commercialism overtaking their beachfront. For those who prefer a more secluded and rustic beachscape, places like Hiriketiya are perfect! A string of unspoiled seasides are scattered along this section, most prominently the enchanting little bay shaped like a horseshoe, Hiriketiya. The beachfront and its interiors have a small choice of wonderful places to eat, stay, do yoga and the like. Sri Lanka culture tours such as the ones offered by the likes of NKAR Travel House, are excellent to scour the coastline with a guided tour.

3

Arugam Bay

Located on the southern extremity of the eastern coast is Sri Lanka's own surfer's paradise - the little town of Arugam Bay. Located in Pottuvil, this area has become a favoured destination for many travellers who are attracted by the beauty and serenity of this palm-lined beach. Here you will encounter wave activity that is perfect for surfing. The beach attracts tons of surfers and many competitions are held annually. Apart from the surf, the laidback atmosphere and allure of the place have won the hearts of many travellers to this region. The Pottuvil lagoon is beautiful as well! Boat trips and dolphin-watching excursions are popular activities for visitors. The tightly-knit and conservative Muslim community in Pottuvil has opposed major hotels; however, comfy small-scale hotels, beach bungalows, and guesthouses will make your stay more intimate and special.

4

Mirissa Beach

Located on the southern coast, Mirissa Beach is a stunner! Surrounded by coconut trees and clear blue warm waters, it is excellent for surfing and swimming. Mirissa is a whale-watching hot spot, with many operators conducting excursions. However, be cautious of whom you choose; some are reckless and venture too close and disturb the animals. The beach strip has a great social scene, with plenty of restaurants with candlelit dining on the beach, discos, parties and bars. There is also a parrot hill and coconut tree hill to capture some incredible photos of beautiful Mirissa overlooking the beach and dense forests.

5

Uppuveli Beach

On the eastern coast northward of Trincomalee is the sleepy little village of Uppuveli. Off the tourist trail, it is among the best-hidden gems on the island. It has been off-limits for the public for decades. Uppuveli beach is a serene and unspoiled stretch of coastline, with pristine golden sand and crystal clear waters. The beach is fringed by coconut palms and lush vegetation, providing shade and shelter from the sun. It is the perfect place to relax and unwind, far away from the crowds and chaos of the more popular tourist destinations.
