In the report, Folkman explains that corrosion can contribute to many common failures. The most common failure mode reported in the study was a circumferential crack, which he says is commonly found on cast iron and asbestos cement pipes. Cast iron pipes and asbestos cement pipes comprised 28% and 13%, respectively, of the pipe materials on the studied water mains. PVC pipes don't contribute to PFAS contamination. They contain no PFAS, none are produced during manufacturing, and they protect water from external contamination. Utilities and consumers can trust that PVC pipes won't introduce PFAS into drinking water.

The Association assists utilities and consulting engineers in the design, specification and installation of PVC piping systems and provides after-sales technical support. We believe that manufacturers of PVC pipe who are members of PVCPA are responsible producers and that municipalities should specify and buy their PVC pipe from them.

Hydraulic flow research has shown that flow conditions in PVC gravity sewer pipes can be designed conservatively using Manning’s formula. Although Kutter’s formula had been used since the early 1900s for open-channel flow, the equation was unwieldy and difficult to use.Due to its relative simplicity, Manning’s formula has become the preferred design method.

When a load of pipe arrives at the job site, it is your responsibility to check it thoroughly. If possible, inspect each piece for damage. Check quantities against the shipping list. Note that the policy of most pipe manufacturers is that once the pipe leaves the manufacturer’s plant, it becomes the property of the shipping company. Any damaged or missing items should be documented on the bill of lading. Set aside any damaged items and notify the shipper.
