One-Week Road Tripping Around Glorious Oman – Exploring Oman’s Hidden Gems

Oman is an ideal destination for a scenic road trip, with its stunning landscapes, winding roads, mountains, mosques, and fortresses providing a unique experience. Here are six must-visit destinations to include in your road trip itinerary:

1

Bimmah Sinkhole

After a restful night in Muscat, start your journey with a trip to Bimmah sinkhole, located to the south of the city. According to local folklore, the sinkhole was created by a falling star thousands of years ago. It's highly recommended to pack a swimsuit for a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters. You can access the bottom of the sinkhole via steps or by diving in if you are an experienced swimmer. Caution is advised as it has depths that exceed 300 feet. If you continue to Salalah, consider staying at one of the Oman resorts the likes of Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara.

2

Wadi Shab

Just a 21-minute drive from the sinkhole, Wadi Shab is a two-hour hike that should not be missed. The trail requires crossing a small river, with boats available to ferry hikers across for a fee of 2.50 USD. The hike offers stunning canyon terrain, emerald, green rock pools, hidden caves, and breathtaking landscapes. Arriving at 7 am will ensure a tranquil hike with fewer people.

3

City of Sur

Sur, located on Oman's eastern coast, is a thriving port city with plenty of attractions. Sunaysilah Fort sits at the heart of the city, with four watchtowers guarding the courtyard. The Maritime Museum is also worth a visit, showcasing numerous artifacts and live ship models. Towards the southeast lies Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve, a nesting site for green turtles. To the west of Sur are the rugged cliffs surrounding the lush Wadi Bani Khalid Valley.

4

Wahiba Sands

From Sur, travel 95 km inland to reach the desert region of Oman, named after the Bani Wahiba Tribe. Experience the desert by staying in one of the camps located on the sands. The highlight of the visit will be the spectacular sunset overlooking the desert, with the massive dunes changing colours as the sun sets. Spend the night stargazing under the clear desert sky.

5

Nizwa

Heading north from the desert, you will reach the charming city of Nizwa after a long drive of at least 2.5 hours. The fort and the famous souq are the major attractions in the city. The souq is situated at the base of the magnificent Hajar Mountains and opens after 4 pm. Other attractions include Bahla Fort and Jabreen Castle, as well as Wadi Ghul, also known as the Omani Grand Canyon, and Jebel Shams, the tallest peak on the peninsula, but they require more time to visit.

6

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

The journey from Nizwa to Muscat takes 1.5 hours. If you have half a day left, visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in Oman. The mosque's architecture is awe-inspiring, and wandering around its halls, garden, and verandas will be an unforgettable experience.
