Top 6 free things to do in Windhoek – Free, but awesome!

The capital city of Namibia, Windhoek is located in the central highlands of the country. It's special not just because it's the capital city, but also due to many reasons. While many attractions are here to be explored, some of them are totally free!

1

Explore the Namibia Craft Centre

One of the free things to do in Windhoek is to explore the Namibia Craft Centre. This is a place from where you can purchase arts and crafts from mostly Namibian craftsmen. About 5% of the stalls, you find here will be owned by non-Namibian artists, but they surely belong to the African region. You come across some unique pieces of jewellery here, food items, and even statues made of wood and metal. If you buy something from here, it also means you lend a helping hand to the local community financially.

2

Visit the National Museum of Namibia

Namibia is a country that has struggled a lot to become a free state. So, in remembrance of these historical moments, the National Museum of Namibia has been established, which is also known as the Independence Memorial Museum. This museum features two important statues, and each of them has a background story that's worth exploring. The museum tells a lot more about the war that the country has been through for years through photos, and if you take a guided tour, you may get to know all their stories as well.

3

Explore the Parliament Gardens

During your stay at Avani Windhoek Hotel & Casino, do not forget to visit the Parliament Gardens. It's a small park that has an olive grove. This park was initially known as the 'Tintenpalast Gardens', but the name was changed when the country received independence back in 1990. Twice every month, the College of the Arts in Namibia hosts the 'Theatre in the Park', and if you catch this when you are there, consider yourself extremely blessed.

4

Visit the Zoo Park

Zoo Park in Windhoek is a public recreational area with some great monuments worth exploring. Thanks to the shady trees, beautifully designed ponds, and lawns, the leisurely feeling that this park gives is magical. Do not forget to see the glory of the War Memorial Monument that is located here which pays the nation's tribute to the war heroes.

5

Explore the Maerua Mall

Shopping can be an expensive task, but you don't really need money to have some good window-shopping moments. Do you? So, when you are in Windhoek, go to the Maerua Mall which is the 03rs largest shopping hub in the country. If you feel like spending some money on movie time, a cinema is available here, and there is a gym as well. The Mall was opened back in 2006, but it's home to hundreds of stalls and restaurants today.

Feel blessed at ST. Mary's Cathedral

This is one of the best Roman Catholic churches you find in Namibia. The church has been built in 1908, and it conducts religious services every day except Mondays. So, you may visit this church and explore its glory while also getting the blessings of St. Mary.
