Discover the Hidden Gems of Phuket: A Guide to the Island's Lesser-Known Attractions and Experiences

Although Phuket is one of Thailand's most popular beach paradises, there are certain points of interest and experiences even seasoned visitors are unaware of. Here's a rundown of the island's hidden attractions and activity hubs.

1

Thai Amulets Market

Occupying pride of place off Rassada Road in the heart of Phuket Old Town is a marketplace that most tourists miss but locals frequent. The Thai Amulets Market is arguably the most unique souvenir shopping hotspot on the island as this bazaar retails countless Buddhist-themed amulets that have been blessed by monks all across Thailand. These sacred accessories are made in precious materials including pure gold and silver as well as metal, gypsum and clay so the cost of an amulet will be based on its value. Open to visitors from 8 am onwards, the market closes at 7 pm.

2

Ao Sane Beach

Located on the island's south-western shoreline, this out-of-the-way beach is one of Phuket's least visited beaches. The tiny cove that is only 200m long offers beachgoers the chance to relax and unwind in a serene environment away from prying eyes and noisy children. With a thick wilderness at its back and crystal clear waters surrounded by massive granite boulders at its front, the Ao Sane Beach is a little piece of paradise close to the city. What's more, the beach is also considered a great spot for snorkelling tours.

3

Samet Nangshe Viewpoint

Even the expats are largely unaware of this vaulted vantage point that's called the Samet Nangshe Viewpoint. This viewpoint is located at the summit of a hill that's easy to drive up to from a main road in Phang Nga, what sets this lookout point apart from others on the island is that it is free from light pollution. The best time to hike or drive up to this summit is during the sunrise and the sunset hours.

4

Shrine of the Serene Light

Tourists based at Travelodge Phuket Town or any other family hotel in Phuket must also pay homage to the Shrine of the Serene Light. Counted among the island's oldest Chinese temples, this charming place of worship is hidden in plain sight and even contains a picturesque courtyard. Built in 1891, the temple is renowned locally for its architectural beauty as it displays the characteristics of traditional Hokkien Chinese temples. The roof, with its terracotta tiles and the single-floor layout, are some of these features.

5

Koh Bon

When it comes to lesser-known islands off the coast of Phuket, none are quite as breathtaking as Koh Bon. Practically omitted from travel brochures due to the lack of development and resorts on the island, Koh Bon is the perfect destination for a day trip. This 1.2km length island boasts one restaurant so one can go for a swim and enjoy a scrumptious lunch before crossing back to the mainland on a long tail boat.

6

Ao Yon Beach

Ao Yon Beach is situated in a residential area, so it is easy to understand why most travellers are unaware of this particular beach hub. Bordered by a charming fishing village, the peaceful beach where local boats and yachts are known to moor is a big hit with locals due to its soft sand and small cove.
