Whale watching is something most don’t get the chance to experience, hence if you have the opportunity make sure you are well equipped to enjoy the experience whilst being comfortable, protected from the weather and can view and capture those special antics of whales which are rarely encountered.

Sunglasses

The sun hitting the water creates a powerful glare which will be in your eyes when you spot whales. After taking all the trouble for your trip doing whale watching in Mirissa you should not be squinting at them, rather you should be savouring them and their antics, so make sure to protect your eyes from the glare of the harmful rays of the sun and give you sharper visibility.

2

Sunscreen

Just as much as you need to protect your eyes, protect your skin from the harsh ultraviolet rays of the sun. Irrespective of the season or the temperature at the location, by using good sunscreen for whale watching you will not experience any discomfort by getting skin burns due to exposure to the sun. Keep applying throughout the expedition as needed. Even though you use waterproof sunscreen, do re-apply if you get wet as sunscreens are not 100 per cent waterproof.

Camera

It is absolutely important to enjoy those rare sightings of whales as experienced by guests at Sri Sharavi Beach Villas and it is also unique to capture those images that you witness to view back and relive later to cherish the memories. So packing your camera ideally with telephoto lenses to capture the best images, is as important as the sun protection items you plan to take along.

Extra Batteries

Whale watching means you are out on the water for a considerable time. So ensure your camera and phone if that is what you intend to use for images have backup power by way of batteries, USB battery packs etc to not be disappointed by losing battery power at a crucial time.

Binoculars

Sometimes whales come near the boat and it is easy to click a photograph of them or see them close at hand. But you sometimes spot them at a distance, so having a pair of binoculars is a must to get a good view of them even when they are far away from you.

6

Hat or Visor

Using a wide-brimmed hat certainly protects your face and eyes from harsh glares and is a handy help, ensure it has a strap to hold down when winds pick up at the location.

7

Waterproof Bag

Have a waterproof bag to hold all the important paraphernalia you require together and to protect them from ocean sprays on the boat. Go for a waterproof bag rather than a water-resistant one to ensure no leakage.

8

Water and Snacks

Being hydrated and satiated is key while you remain in the water for long periods to accomplish your mission of whale watching. Hence pack adequate water and snacks. Water bottles need to be plastic and you drink off the bottle. Use snacks which are healthy and provide your fibre, protein and carb intake for the period you are in the water.
