On October 16, 2012, Apple announced a media event scheduled for October 23 at the California Theatre in San Jose, California. The company did not predisclose the subject of the event, but it was widely expected to be the iPad Mini.

Once upon a time, "iPod speaker docks" were considered the easiest way to hear music from an iPod (and, later, iPhone). Recently, however, two things have changed the speaker dock landscape: the rise of wireless speakers (AirPlay or Bluetooth), and Apple's transition to the new Lightning connector, which isn't compatible with the old 30-pin connectors, accessories, and docks -- at least, not without the addition of an expensive adapter.
