Ways to prevent and treat styes

A stye is a bacterial infection that occurs on the upper and lower eyelid of the eyes. The glands that produce lubrication for the eyes get clogged, kind of like a pimple. Oil, makeup, and dead skin cells can all be the culprit of a stye. If you have ever had a stye you know just how annoying it can be and some even require minor surgery to get rid of them.

Practice good hygiene

Practice good hygiene

This is the number one way to prevent and treat styes. Utah’s dry weather can take a toll on your eyes. Dust, makeup and bacteria can get into an eyelid pore and clog it, creating the stye. It is important to never fall asleep with your makeup on and to regularly cleanse the eyelids to remove buildup and bacteria so that they don’t clog your eyelids.

Use warm compress

Use warm compress

If you happen get a stye, using a warm compress will soothe the irritation and make the stye drain. This probably sounds gross, but it isn’t at all. Use a warm washcloth and hold it up to your eye 4-6 times a day for 10-15 minutes. This will drain the stye and make it go away. If left untreated the stye could become worse and require a visit to your Utah doctor.

Be stingy

Do not share you makeup with your Utah friends and never touch your eyes with dirty hands. Eye infections can be passed around from sharing makeup and brushes. Kindly refuse using others makeup and keep yours to yourself as well. Being negligent about your eyes could cause the stye to become so pronounced that it will require surgery to treat it.

Don’t mess with it

Don’t mess with it

The only thing you should be doing to the stye is heating it with a hot compress. Squeezing, poking, picking or trying to pop the stye will only make it worse. Your doctor can drain it once it is ready, but if not treated correctly, it may require surgery by a doctor to scoop out the build up in order to remove it completely.
