Local Dishes to Try out While You're in Koh Samui - Treats to keep you wanting more!

Koh Samui boasts the same delectable treats, as in the mainland! You might be able to devour some tasty foods distinct to Koh Samui at their ever-popular night markets and top class restaurants.

1

Thai Iced Tea

Thai iced tea is a signature Thai creation you must enjoy while there! You will come across numerous vendors and coffee shops peddling this drink all across Samui. The markets are a great place to try it and an excellent way to cool off on a typical hot and humid Thai day. Freshly brewed black tea is mixed with condensed milk, evaporated milk and sugar before it gets poured into a tall glass filled with ice – so simple and satisfying!

2

Mango sticky rice

This is the national dessert of Thailand! Warm glutinous rice is doused in a sweet, warm coconut milk mixture, letting the rice absorb all the coconut goodness. The coconut sticky rice is topped with the freshest and juiciest mangoes and more coconut milk! Most restaurants in Koh Samui offered by the likes of Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort will offer this dish.

3

Roti Gluay

This is another popular dessert all over Thailand. You will frequently bump into food carts with roti makers pulling blobs of dough! Its preparation is a delight, as it is to eat! The flaky, buttery dough is filled with bananas and cooked on a hot girdle. Although banana is the most favoured ingredient, you can add other toppings like coconut, condensed milk, chocolate sauce, honey, and Nutella!

4

Thai Noodle Soups

The noodle soups in Thailand are so wholesome, delicious, and comforting. The type of noodles can range from rice noodles to egg noodles. Frequently used ingredients include eggs, tofu shallots, shrimp, pork, curry paste, peanuts, coconut milk and lots of spices and aromatics. Among the best noodle dishes are; boat noodles (guay tiew Ruea), Red Curry Noodles, Tom Yum Noodle Soup, Bha Mee Moo Daeng (egg noodle soup with roast pork), Khao-soy (Northern Thai curry noodles) and Yen Ta Fo (pink noodle soup). The night markets at Samui are just the places to run into for all these delicious bowls of soup!

Grilled sticky rice

Much like a rice Popsicle, this smooth and crunchy rice on a stick is a delicious snack to look out for while in Koh Samui! Sticky rice gets shaped into a disk, battered in an egg yolk mixture and fried on a hot girdle. With its soft rice centre, savoury and crunchy egg coating, this is just the snack to calm those hunger pangs.

6

Pad Thai

When in the Thai islands, you have to try the authentic Pad Thai. This affordable and tasty meal is ubiquitous in Thailand, from street markets to posh restaurants. The famous night markets are a great place to try out local foods like Pad Thai. The fresh stir-fried rice noodles get sauteed with red pepper, shrimp, eggs, sprouts, and tofu, then topped off with peanuts and coriander leaves. And of course, that signature tangy, sweet and spicy tamarind sauce brings this whole dish together.
