The Grand Palace is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bangkok. It is a complex of buildings that was the official residence of the Kings of Siam (and later Thailand) from the 18th century until 1925. The palace complex is divided into two sections: the Outer Court, where the king would hold audiences and other official functions; and the Inner Court, where the royal family lived. Today, the Grand Palace is open to the public as a museum, and it is one of the most visited sites in Bangkok. There are several different buildings and courtyards within the complex, each with its own unique architecture and features. Highlights include Wat Phra Kaew (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha), which houses Thailand's most sacred Buddhist statue; Wat Pho (the Temple of the Reclining Buddha), which contains a massive gold-plated statue of Buddha; and Amarapura Hall, a former royal reception hall with beautiful glass mosaics.
