Ways to escape the stress of life

Here in Utah, the beehive state, we all lead busy lives. It’s easy to get stressed out and overwhelmed by our to-do lists. Once in a while (preferably every week), we need to take a breath, relax and have a day to ourselves to rejuvenate and regroup. This is not just a luxury, it is an absolute necessity for our health and well being. So here is a list of ways to create an escape for yourself within your own home.

Escape from your devices

Turn off your cell phone, shut down your computer and shut off the TV. This time is just for you, make sure nothing will be able to interrupt you.

Make this time for you and you alone. Send your family out or escape from other housemates in your room. Put a sign up to make it clear this is your time and you do not wish to be disturbed! If you have a pet, they’re welcome to stay only if they help you feel happy and relaxed.

Find something that makes you calm and happy. Maybe it’s reading a book uninterrupted. Utah has an excellent library system. There are cozy nooks in many libraries if you wish to get away. Maybe it’s painting, or even going for a run. If so Utah has an answer to both with amazing scenery and many parkways. It might be as simple as a bubble bath, as long as it’s comforting and stress free, go for it.

Aromatherapy can take you to a new level of relaxation. Essential oils, especially used in a relaxing bubble bath, can positively affect your mood. Lavender for example is soothing, and peppermint can wake you up cognitively.

Being a grown up is hard work. Sometimes it’s a good idea to forget about all of our responsibilities and be a kid again. Do something you loved to do as a child. Did you love to dig in the dirt? Work in the Garden. Did you love to finger paint? Finger paint! Maybe you loved to have tea parties? Throw yourself a tea party. Think of a few things you loved to do when you were that age and do it! Who cares if it’s age-inappropriate?

Music affects your mood, so listen to something upbeat and happy or listen to something calm and mellow, whichever is going to help you unwind the best.

Look for little opportunities for some downtime in your day. Throw off your normal routine, spend five minutes on the phone with a friend, take the dog for a walk around the block, or take the scenic route home from work. Even these small changes to your routine can have big benefits.
