Burr Grinder VS Blade

A Burr Grinder - Amateur Gourmet

Following my coffee trials on this blog must be like having a petulant four year-old child who wants soup then wants pizza then wants soup again and so on. See, at first I told you not to worry about grinding your beans fresh in my post: "How To Make a Good Cup of Coffee."

The best burr grinders

A blade coffee grinder, which is the standard for most home coffee drinkers, has a food processor-like blade that swings around and chops up coffee beans. The grinders are usually fairly inexpensive and do the job of grinding up beans faster than you could do it with a hammer, but they are not necessarily very efficient, nor do they come close to getting the coffee beans evenly ground.

Great Espresso requires a very precise grind. Review the best coffee grinders, both burr & blade, to fit your needs and budget at www.wholelattetlove.com

Does burr-ground coffee taste different than blade-ground coffee?

I could not find any academic studies on this topic, but there is a good discussion of grinders in November 1, 2001 issue of Cook's Illustrated . Cook's Illustrated is not science, but they do provide empirically-based and often experimentally-informed opinions (in contrast with other cooking / kitchen equipment review outfits).
