There are common misconceptions among design engineers regarding pipe stiffness, pipe deflection, impact strength, abrasion, and design life when comparing PVC and fiberglass (FRP) sewer pipes. When correct evaluations are done, PVC is the product of choice. Standards PVC sewer pipe has been used for more than 60 years, at first in smaller diameters but now in sizes up to 60-inch.
Underground water Pipes
Molecularly oriented polyvinyl chloride pipe is called “PVCO” pipe. PVCO uses the same materials as PVC, but the pipe is mechanically stretched as part of the manufacturing process. This stretching realigns the material’s molecules to provide enhanced tensile-strength capabilities. The result is thinner-walled pipe with the same pressure capacity as thicker-walled PVC pipe.
Conservative design is essential for engineers to prevent potential issues. However, excessive conservatism can lead to inefficient resource use.
Our mission is to promote use of longer-life, lower-maintenance, corrosion-proof PVC pipe in water and wastewater systems – for real sustainability, strength

The PVC Pipe Association's position paper highlights the health, safety, and environmental benefits of PVC pipes. It emphasizes their adherence to water quality standards, safety in production and installation, recyclability, minimal environmental impact, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. PVC pipes are deemed safer, more sustainable, and environmentally friendly compared to alternatives
PVCO pipe, made from polyvinyl chloride, undergoes mechanical stretching, aligning molecules for greater tensile strength. Despite thinner walls, it matches thicker PVC pipe in pressure capacity. Introduced in North America in 1979, it conforms to ASTM F1483, AWWA C909, and CSA B137.3.1 standards, meeting NSF Standard 61 for potable water.

This calculator was developed in accordance with the equations and procedures found in the Handbook of PVC Pipe Design and Construction (5th Edition). The user is encouraged to reference the document if more information on external load calculations is needed. Conservative assumptions have been used to provide a conservative design with appropriate safety factors. Designers are responsible for the proper use of this program for all projects.
Over Ten Million Quality Control Tests
This study aims to assess underground pipeline infrastructure with the objective of providing sustainable sewer and water services for a duration of 100 years: (1) with minimal risk of degradation of water quality, (2) while reducing operating costs,
PVC pipe and fittings are resistant to chemicals generally found in water and sewer systems, preventing any leaching or releases to ground and surface water during the use of the piping system. No known chemicals are released internally into the water system. No known toxicity effects occur in the use of the product.

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been widely used in several industries. Unfortunately, medical science has determined that these chemicals are harmful to human health. In response, the U.S. EPA has set limits on the amount of PFAS allowed in drinking water.
There is good and bad news on this subject:
The bad news is that PFAS are widespread in the environment and may still be present in drinking water in very small quantities.
This document has been developed by the Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association for design and installation of gasketed PVC fittings where gasketed PVC pressure pipe is used in potable water, force main, pressure irrigation, and reclaimed water applications. The guide provides information on gasketed PVC fittings that are available for various dimension ratios and outside diameters of PVC pipe through 60-inch.This document does not include information on solvent welded or fusible PVC fittings.
