10 Things to know before you arrive in Dubai - It’s not only about sand!

Dubai is popular in all corners of the world as a unique city. For those with an untreatable case of wanderlust, Dubai will be your dream city. It unfolds all exciting elements from futuristic architecture, historic sights, out-of-this-world attractions, and an active nightlife.

1

Best time to visit

You might be wondering why you need an ideal time to visit Dubai when it is warm all year round. Dubai has two seasons: hot and hotter. However, for the locals, the winter season is between October and April when the weather is perfect to spend time at beaches. It is also the rainy season. Don't worry as these rain showers don't last long. Keep these in mind when you plan your itinerary.

2

Book your flights well ahead of time

No one would like to burn a hole in their pocket when on a vacation! Always make sure you book flights in advance because international airlines announce their cheapest seats at least six months before departure dates. It is a good idea to start comparing prices. It is recommended to buy tickets at least one month in advance.

3

Book a hotel

As Dubai is a popular vacation spot, especially between October and April, you want to be sure you book a nice place to stay prior to your arrival. You can choose from a range of accommodation options such as luxury resorts, apartments, and many a Palm Jumeirah hotel the likes of Avani Palm View Dubai offering easy access to Dubai Marina, JBR beach, Nakheel mall, and the city's other iconic attractions.

4

Show respect during religious festivals

Ramadan is the most common religious festival celebrated by locals in Dubai and it is their main religious festival. If you visit this city during Ramadan (the ninth month of the 12-month Islamic calendar), make sure you respect the Muslims practising their fasting. You cannot drink, eat, or smoke in public in front of them between sunset and sunrise.

5

Dress modestly

The best tip for you when packing your vacation wardrobe would be to think conservative over flashy and revealing. Female clothing is considered indecent if it is transparent, tight, or too short while men should not walk anywhere in the public without a shirt on. Dress modestly and respect the Muslim culture.

6

No picture without permission!

Unless you are capturing a shot in a major touristy area, make sure you never take a picture with a stranger without their permission. Avoid taking any picture of a Muslim woman without their permission. Also, you should not take pictures of military installations, airports, and government buildings.

7

Tipping?

Even though tipping is not really expected in Dubai, it is a common practice here. supermarket baggers and luggage carriers are usually given a small tip for their services. Taxi drivers do not expect to receive a tip here.

8

Giving addresses to taxi drivers

Getting around Dubai in a taxi is a fairly cheap mode of transportation when in Dubai. You cannot assume that every taxi driver knows every restaurant and street in Dubai. They might not know every landmark in the city, so make sure you give them big city landmarks.

9

Be aware when you consume alcohol

Alcohol is legal in Dubai. However, you should refrain from consuming alcohol in public places and drive after consuming alcohol. Both are prohibited here. You cannot buy alcohol for yourself without a permit.

10

Stay away from PDA

Be aware that public displays of affection are considered offensive in Dubai. Respect their culture and avoid kissing and holding hands with your significant other while in public.
