Places to see in Maldives – Explore the unique culture of the Maldives as you experience the sun, sea and sand!

An archipelago of many islands dotted on the Indian Ocean; the Maldives beholds a host of quintessential treasures amongst the cluster of islands. From the simple and friendly people to its beautiful paradisial shores, the nation has many other unique attractions and features worth your exploration.

1

Male the Capital City

Teeming with people and scooters and bazaars laden with aromatic spices, coconuts and other goodies this city gives one the impression of being overcrowded, which is exactly the case. However, visit this Capital City and explore the important landmarks such as the Grand 17th century Friday Mosque, and the Islamic Centre and do a trip to the local market. These will make you appreciate the rich Islamic traditions and culture of Male and also give you a feel of local vibes as often experienced by visitors from luxury villas in Maldives.

2

Off-beat Island getaway at Maafushi

Ravaged by the ferocious Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004, this charming island has been rebuilt and rehabilitated in the last decade with the fishing jetties restored and still attracts visitors with its gorgeous beaches on a backdrop of palms, gently lapping waves and pristine sands, minus the sprawling luxury resorts unlike at many other uninhabited islands. However, it still keeps attracting visitors with the opening up of local guesthouses as an off-beat island getaway for budget travellers and those seeking moderate comforts.

3

Futuristic Hulhumale

Situated right across from the capital city Male, this new island has arisen from the ocean. Being developed on reclaimed land this is also home to Velana International Airport which is the main gateway to the islands for most visitors. Though it is a man-made island, it certainly is a fascinating one with an artificial beach looking almost real and lengthy walking promenades above the Indian Ocean which are enjoyed by guests from properties like Nova Maldives. The glass-capped Mosque is another attraction worth visiting in Hulhumale.

4

Historical Utheemu

Situated on Haa Aliff Atoll in the northernmost part of the Maldives, this beautiful island is blessed with the same treasures of fine white sand, and gently lapping waves against a tropical sky. However, what attracts most visitors here is not only this natural beauty, it is the historical significance of being the home island of the revered Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, the patriotic leader who was responsible for driving out the Portuguese invaders from the isles in the 16th century. Visit Utheemu Ganduravu, the impressive palace of timber where the Sultan grew up as well as enjoy the lovely island of Utheemu.

Enchanting Banana Reef

For lovers of diving heading to the Maldives for a memorable underwater experience, the best place is Banana Reef. This banana-shaped curve of corals in breathtaking hues and the sandbanks clad in seaweed lie between the isles of the corals in North Male Atoll. The many operators at this atoll are well experienced to lead countless excursions to discover the striped snappers, the reef sharks, bulbous sponges and the barracudas that coalesce at this reef.
