Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple

The Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple is a historic Buddhist site in the heart of Sri Lanka. It is comprised of five separate cave shrines. Since the third century BCE, Buddhist monks living in the surrounding forest have used these caves as their home. Over the course of history, they have transformed these caves through one of the largest but also most phenomenal Buddhist complexes throughout the South Eastern Asian region, complete with a number of unique architectural features.
The cave shrines went through a number of remodelling and refurbishment programmes until taking on their present interior shapes in the 18th century, all in accordance with a strong tradition linked with ongoing Buddhist ritual practises and continual royal support.

Sigiriya

Possibly dating back to prehistoric times, the Sigiriya region was home to a sizable population. From at least the third century BC onward, Buddhist monks and ascetics may be seen living in the many nearby rock shelters and caves. The Aligala rock shelter to the east of Sigiriya rock is the earliest evidence of human settlement in Sigiriya, dating back to almost 5,000 years ago, during the Mesolithic Period making this region well worth a visit.

The Kandalama Reservoir

Kandalama, Sri Lanka is home to a reservoir known as the Kandalama Reservoir (often incorrectly referred to as Kandalama Lake). The reservoir is formed by the Kandalama Dam, which is 21 metres (69 feet) in height and 1,600 metres (5,200 feet) in width. The water stored in the dam is pumped out and used for irrigation in a wide area, all the way to Kekirawa. Damming the Mirisgoniya River, a major tributary of Kala Wewa, formed the tank. The Department of Irrigation of Sri Lanka refurbished the tank between the years 1952 and 1957. The hotel and reservoir are in the same area as the ancient Kaludiya Pokuna Forest.

Popham's Arboretum

By definition, an arboretum is a park or garden where only trees that are still alive are shown. The Sam Popham Arboretum at the National Institute of Forestry and Fisheries (NIFS) was produced not by tree planting but through a technique called assisted natural regeneration (ANR).
The field of restoration ecology makes extensive use of ANR. In terms of ANR, NIFS Sam Popham's Arboretum (NIFS-SPA) serves as a standard. The growth of forest area seedlings is aided and promoted using this strategy, which is both simple and inexpensive. This technique keeps grasses in check and keeps out invasive plants like creepers and prickly bushes, allowing native seedlings to flourish.
