9 Reasons to Visit Oman: An Amazing Desert Destination - Discover the best of Oman!

Oman is a place of wonder for all those who descend to its desert shores. Don't miss out on the amazing adventures to be had in an incredible desert location.

1

Ideal for road trips

Oman is made for long road trips! Its naturally rugged and jaw-dropping terrain is one of its major attractions. Imposing mountains, incredible wadi's (natural watering holes) and unearthly desert environments will pique the interest of all those who love the great outdoors.

2

The Sinkholes

Bimmah sinkhole is towards the south when travelling from Muscat. Legend has it that a falling star made the sinkhole thousands of years ago. Tawi Atair Sinkhole means the 'well of birds', and it is a captivating sinkhole with honeycombed limestone! Swimming in sinkholes will be an unforgettable experience while in Oman.

3

Musandam Peninsula

This location gets omitted from most Omani travel itineraries and is probably one of the best-hidden locations in Oman! Encounter the stunning Hajar Mountains, sitting on the Arabian tectonic plate, which are sinking 5mm annually! This has resulted in a gorgeous string of fjords with an unbelievable landscape!

4

Mountain Hikes

The incredible canyons and cliffs will have some thrilling times in store for all those who like to amble along mountainous terrain. Discover the numerous trails in Western Hajar to consider, where valleys and swimming in wadis will be quite the adventure! Also try, Wadi Tawi, Wadi Darabat, Wadi Shab, Wadi Bani Khalid and Eastern Hajar Mountains.

5

Masira Island

If you have ever wanted to feel what it is like to live on a deserted island, Masira Island might be the place for you! This gorgeous island has empty sandy beaches, jagged rocky peaks, and free-roaming wildlife.

6

Diving

It might seem like a surprise to many, but Oman has awesome diving spots overlooked by travellers. A perk is that you will most likely have all the famous diving locations to yourself. Popular locations like Bandar Khairan, the wreckage of Al Munassir, as well as the Daymaniyat Archipelago, have over 20 diving sites!

7

Arabian style souks

Experience what it's like to wander around traditional Middle Eastern marketplaces that you have read about in books and seen in movies! Also called souks, these will store all kinds of Omani silver, traditional jewellery, khanjars, frankincense, pashminas, old furniture, garments, trinkets, tasty treats, and carved doors! All articles are bargainable, but things like silver will fluctuate daily.

8

Beaches

Surprisingly, there are some amazing beaches in Oman! Mughsail Beach in Salalah is known for its turquoise blue waters, white sandy coastline, and panoramic mountain ridges. For your holiday in Oman, a Salalah beach resort the likes of Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara would be among the top choices for accommodation. Masira Island is close to the beaches of Dhofar, and the Daymaniyat Islands also have excellent beaches. In Ras Al Jinz, the fishing village, there is the Ras AI Hadd Turtle Reserve, where endangered species like green turtles visit every year to lay their eggs.

9

Omani sweets

The food is amazing in general! But the sweets are exceptional and quite unlike anything you would have come across. The liberal use of spices such as cardamom, saffron, rose water, cinnamon and cloves make their desserts fragrant and delectable. Try the likes of luqaimat, all kinds of halwa, and Omani puddings!
