6 Not-to-be-missed Beijing Street Foods – Tantalizing Treats for the Visitor

Visitors to the Chinese capital, Beijing, will have the opportunity to savour a variety of delectable street foods, such as savoury crepes, donkey burgers, hot pot bowl soup, pork belly bun and more!

1

Savoury crepe

The much-loved savoury crepe or jianbing would undoubtedly be one of China's favourite street foods. It is most often enjoyed for breakfast but would be available for other meals as well. You will have the chance to observe the interesting way it is created; you will see the vendor fashioning a large crepe from the batter (composed of wheat flour and mung bean flour), adding an egg and a sprinkling of scallions, cilantro and pickles; after this, it is flipped over and the final ingredients are added for you to enjoy this yummy treat.

2

Donkey burger

The intriguing donkey burger happens to be a Beijing dish that may now be rather difficult to find, but would be an interesting snack, nonetheless. To make the donkey burger, the pastry shell would be stuffed with shredded donkey meat, cilantro and green chillies. Although the more mainstream version of this food made from pork would be much easier to find, savouring the authentic donkey burger would be a unique culinary experience, even though it may be somewhat costlier.

3

Hot pot bowl soup

Even though this culinary speciality (locally called malatang) may have originated in Sichuan, you would be able to enjoy it practically wherever you go in Beijing. To enjoy this culinary creation, you would have to take the basket provided and make your choices from the selection of meats, tofu, noodles, vegetables, and other foodstuffs available; the chef will then cook the selected ingredients in a flavourful broth, adding spices and condiments to complete the delicious dish.

4

Chinese pork belly bun

Sometimes called the 'Chinese hamburger', this very popular Beijing street food happens to be a flaky bun filled with shredded pork, called roujiamo in the native tongue. You will also typically find other ingredients in this snack such as a diced boiled egg, chilli peppers, chives, and cilantro. However, the principal flavours of this food would be derived from the zesty sauces in which the pork is cooked. An accommodation choice to consider where you could also enjoy traditional local snacks and go on foodie tours would be Somerset Daxing Beijing which may be regarded as an appealingly located Beijing Daxing accommodation.

5

Cold skin noodles

This appealing vegan speciality would be an invigoratingly cool dish that would be ideal for the months of summer. You would be able to order it from street carts loaded with mountain-like heaps of noodles. You will have the option of selecting either the flat thick white wheat noodles (liangpi) or the yellowish noodles made from rice (known as liang mian). The vendor would add several other ingredients such as strips of vegetables, delectable condiments, and spices to the dish as well.

6

Boiled or fried dumplings

If you happen to venture out into Beijing's streets in the late hours of the night, you will find vendors offering delicious, steamed dumplings. You will notice customers sitting on little stools at simple tables savouring several of these delectable small snacks. You may also see vendors selling what are called "potstickers"; these would be crispy dumplings which have been fried, then steamed and later fried once again. Typically, you would be able to choose either a meat or vegetable filling.
