6 Things to Avoid Doing in Laos – For a safe and fun trip!

Easy-going and laid-back, Laos culture is fascinating to explore. If you are planning on visiting, here are some key things to avoid that will help you stay safe, respect the local people and have a fun and memorable trip.

1

Don't go trekking without a guide

Laos is comparatively safe in terms of theft or violent crime, yet it's not without its own brand of danger. From the year 1964 to 1973, over 260 million cluster bombs were dumped in Laos, so there are thousands of unexploded ones that can be found in abundance in the quaint countryside, which routinely injure or kills over 100 people, each year. So, opting to go trekking with an experienced guide, who knows the region and the language, will ensure you have a safe holiday. Many a hotel in Luang Prabang including the likes of Avani+ Luang Prabang will be happy to arrange the services of a guide upon the request of their guests.

2

Don't touch anyone with your feet

In Lao culture, stepping over some who is seated is considered the height of rudeness, since the feet are the lowest part of the body. The same goes for accidentally brushing or kicking another with your feet in a car or while seated at a table. It is highly recommended that you keep your feet firmly on the floor. It's also best to avoid propping your feet on a table, chair or under you.

3

Don't wear shoes inside a temple or a home

Similar to most other Southeast Asian countries, shoes belong outside of the home. Locals either go barefoot or wear house shoes. Sometimes, this practice also extends to some restaurants and stores. If you happen to be in doubt, simply follow what others do.

4

Don't shout, argue or rush locals

Lao people are extremely polite and genteel, and avoid arguing loudly or shouting at any given time. A strong bargaining culture is not particularly prevalent either, so avoid bargaining with abandon. When shopping, if a price has already been lowered, don't argue the price down further. Do be patient, and avoid rushing anyone.

5

Avoid public displays of affection

Locals aren't particularly affectionate in the public among romantic partners or friends. In the local culture, public hugging and such are totally frowned upon. So, make sure to avoid doing so. To err on the side of caution, make sure to behave in a polite and disciplined way at all times when you are out and about.

6

Avoid buying antiques and wildlife products

Remember that it is illegal to take animal pelts and ivory out of the country. If found, the items will be confiscated and you will be fined heavily. It's also illegal to take any antique Buddha sculptures out of Laos. As many have been looted from temples and depleted of their cultural heritage. Alternatively, the woodcarving tradition of Laos is thriving, with skilled local craftsmen creating beautiful pieces which can be purchased as souvenirs at various price ranges.
