Visiting a new travel destination is no doubt exciting – offering endless possibilities in the form of culture, new people, cuisines, beautiful landscapes and activities to take in and enjoy. If you are planning to visit Phuket, and it's your first time, here are some useful tips to keep in mind when planning it.

Book your hotel before you go

Phuket is a highly sought travel destination, and will no doubt leave you spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing your accommodation options. For an easy-going and chilled atmosphere consider the areas of Karon and Kata.

Carry Baht

While almost every establishment in Phuket card payments, taxis and tuk-tuks, the preferred mode of transport here, only accepts cash. You will be happy to know that Thailand offers great exchange rates for major currencies, so you will most likely get a good deal for your currency exchange especially if you are from the UK, USA or European Union member country. If not, it is a good idea to have your money changed into US dollars first.

Do pack for a tropical climate

It's important to remember that Thailand and Phuket in particular are extremely hot and humid, so one should always make it a point to pack clothing items which are breathable and lightweight. Don't forget to pack comfortable shoes, which will see you through lots of walking and sightseeing.

Take a break from the beaches

The fact that the Phuket Beaches are simply amazing is incontestable. and it's easy to get tunnel vision when setting about having yourself unlimited beach time. However, there are plenty of places to visit in Phuket. The Phuket Old Town located on the East Coast is particularly charming and offers a lot of insight into authentic Phuket culture in the form of lively markets, Chinese shrines, Sino-Portuguese buildings, historical mansions and numerous museums. If you are keen to experience Phuket Wildlife sanctuaries and national parks make your way to the north of Phuket. A few beautiful isles to also visit include Koh Bon, Koh Phi Don, Koh Yai and Noi and the Similans.

With its spicy and soulful flavours, Thai cuisine no doubt offers a gastronomic experience – and Phuket is the perfect place to really indulge in the dishes of southern Thailand. Particularly dishes with Malay and Chinese influences.
