7 Excursions You Have to Take in The Maldives – Experience the Maldives like never before!

There is more to the Maldives than lounging on a dreamy beach! Here are some excursions to consider if you want to get some adventure and fun on your perfect island getaway.

1

Visit the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve

It is the seventh biggest coral reef in the world, with over 250 types of corals and home to 1,200 types of fish. The Reserve is visited by endangered species like hawksbill and green turtles, and nurse sharks and has flourishing biodiversity of mangroves. It is also home to other non-marine creatures like lizards, herons, and fruit bats.

2

Wander in the capital

See how the Maldivians live! It is the most populated island in the Maldives, with quite a few attractions, given its size. The Grand Mosque, National Museum, and Fish Market are popular among travellers, and so is Newport, a trendy spot with restaurants on the busy beachside road. Also, visit Majeedhee Magu Road, where you will find a street filled with an abundance of shops with a range of Maldivian treats, clothing, and handicrafts. The street is down the main road and is open from 9 am till 11 pm.

3

An island tour

The Maldives has over 200 islands. While some are private Maldives 5-star hotels, others belong to the state. These islands are great for water activities such as snorkelling and diving and are filled with bounteous vegetation, sparkling blue waters, and stretches of coral beds. Resorts such as Adaaran Prestige Vadoo can arrange such excursions for you.

4

The HP Reef

Journey to the HP Reef in North Male atoll in Furanafushi Island. This protected location is the abode of types of fish and is a unique habitat for colourful corals and watery caverns. Snorkellers can enjoy hours of unhindered reef exploration here!

5

Hanifaru Bay

Known as 'Vandumaafaru' by the locals, it is the centrepiece of the Baa atoll Reserve and a significant feeding spot for manta rays and whale sharks. While snorkelling is allowed, diving is forbidden within the bay. The most suitable time to witness manta rays is from May to November, while whale sharks are visible throughout the year. It is among the most regulated snorkelling locations in the world, where no more than 80 people are allowed in at any given time. Each snorkeler gets 45 minutes each, and tickets have to be purchased from accommodations in association with the Manta Trust.

6

Dive into the Banana Reef

Banana Reef is one of the best diving spots in the world and a place that all diving enthusiasts should visit while in the Maldives! It is famous for its cliffs, caves, projections, and vast coral beds. The reef is like a banana; hence, the name. Moreover, it is the first recognised diving spot in the Maldives!

Dolphin watching

Dolphin watching is a favourite activity for many in the Maldives! You get to see enormous whales and lively dolphins at a safe distance. Dolphin sighting, alongside a sunset cruise, is an experience you won't forget anytime soon! The best time for Dolphin Watching is from January to April, and the ideal time to encounter them is between 9 am - 10:30 am and 3:30 pm - 5 pm. The afternoon cruise will coincide with a breathtaking sunset as you sail over the Indian Ocean.
