Top 6 Things to Do in Kandy, Sri Lanka – A great escape in Sri Lanka’s hill capital

Kandy is a popular tourist destination in Sri Lanka, especially for travellers who come to the country looking to discover the culture and history of this ancient island. Nowadays, tourists come mostly for the beaches and the surfing, but Kandy is worth a visit as well. Here are a few reasons why.

1

Sri Dalada Maligawa

Sri Dalada Maligawa was, at one time, the palatial residence of the king of Kandy: the last monarch of the island. Today, it is home to the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha and is an important site of pilgrimage for the many practitioners of the faith in Sri Lanka. People of varying faiths visit this place of worship, which is located in the heart of Kandy.

2

Kandy Lake

The city of Kandy is built around Bogambara Lake, which is better known as Kandy Lake. It is not a big lake by any means, but it is quite beautiful with a little island in its middle. You can go for boat rides on the lake or just go for an evening walk around it. It's peaceful and beautiful.

3

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

About 4km outside the Kandy City Centre you can find the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. It is a remnant of colonial times but maintained beautifully to this day. The garden is full of different types of trees and flowers from all over the world. The highlight of the garden though is surely the amazing orchid house hidden away inside. Located approximately an hour's drive from The Lavender House and similar other bungalows in Kandy with a swimming pool, these picturesque gardens are a must-visit when in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

4

Bahiravakanda Buddha Statue

As you come into Kandy either by bus or train, one thing you will notice is a giant buddha statue on one of the hills surrounding the city. The giant statue has its gaze focused on the temple of the sacred tooth relic and has a protective presence over the city. You should make your way up to this statue at some point during your stay in Kandy, preferably at night – the city views are exquisite.

5

Dalada Maligawa Museum

It would be fair to call this museum one of the most unique in the world. The exhibits on display are focused mainly on Buddhism and its gradual spread from India to the rest of the world. The exhibits do well in emphasising the peaceful teachings of the Buddha and also show the differences in beliefs of practitioners from different parts of Asia.

6

Esala Perahera

In July, Kandy comes alive with something quite special. Esala Perahera simply translated would mean July Procession, however, there is so much more to this age-old tradition. The procession includes dancers, firebreathers, fire dancers, beautifully dressed elephants, and traditional drummers. The procession is held to honour the sacred tooth relic and serves to exhibit it to the people of the city.
