The top players in the Japanese anime industry are no surprise to hardcore fans: Studio Ghibli, Toei Animation, Kyoto Animation, and Madhouse.
Studio Ghibli, founded by animation legends Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, is responsible for some of the most beloved and acclaimed titles in the medium, including "Spirited Away," "Princess Mononoke," and "My Neighbor Totoro." Kyoto Animation, often referred to as KyoAni, is a Japanese animation studio based in Kyoto. Founded in 1981, the studio gained widespread recognition for their high-quality and visually stunning works, such as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and K-ON!.
Tragically, on July 18th, 2019, Kyoto Animation's 1st Studio building was the target of arson by an unidentified man, resulting in the deaths of 35 employees.
The attack sent shockwaves throughout not only the anime community but also the world at large, causing an outpouring of support for Kyoto Animation and its staff. Despite this tragedy, Kyoto Animation continues to produce beloved works that touch the hearts of viewers all over the world.
