6 Tips for Visiting Krabi, Thailand - Experience the best of Krabi!

Krabi is among the most popular islands in Thailand, known for its rocky limestone cliffs, thick mangrove forests, incredible beaches and offshore islands, like the famous Phi Phi archipelago. Here are some tips and tricks to prepare you for an amazing vacation to Krabi.

1

Stick to local food when possible

Western meals will cost around €40 per individual for all 3 meals, plus any drinks and snacks, while Thai food will cost around €20 per day. Consuming local food is always the better option, not only will it be cheaper but also tastier! However, those with allergies and special dietary needs can request to omit certain ingredients and spices to suit their liking. Most restaurants are very accommodating to tourists. And being in Thailand, it is an opportunity to savour their cuisine till you get sick of it!

2

Go cashless

Thailand is not the most card-friendly destination at all. It is useful to consistently have cash with you at all times, because most places, even some hotels, will levy an extra tax of 3% when conducting transactions via card.

3

Withdrawing cash

Know that ATMs will cost you quite a bit! Usually, the fee is around 220 Thai Baht for each withdrawal. ATMs will levy the same fee, excluding AEON, which is somewhat more reasonable at 150 Baht.
However, on the downside, AEON ATMs are hard to come by and are usually found at local shopping centres away from downtown Krabi. To limit withdrawals, take as much cash as possible, and store them in the hotel safe.

4

Get a sim card

Avoid high roaming costs and buy a traveller SIM card as you reach Thailand. You can readily purchase one at a 7-Eleven, network store or from the airport; however, sometimes dealers will add a premium to sim cards purchased at the airport counters. TrueMove Tourist SIM is priced at 599 Thai Baht with 8GB of data for 15 days. There is an 8-day package, which is 299 Baht. If unsure about the length of your stay, buy a cheaper sim card and top up as you go.

5

Drinking water

Don't attempt to drink water right off the tap. Always make sure that the water is boiled to the heating point or treated. Carrying a reusable bottle of water is always a good idea – you can get boiled water refills from restaurants and hotels. In some places, the only option will be to buy plastic bottles; however, reuse them by getting extra refills for long journeys.

6

How to get about

Transport is great in Krabi. Most sites are within walking distance from the town, while plenty of buses and tuk-tuks will get you around quite efficiently. The other option is to rent a motorbike, which is, perhaps, the most carefree way to travel around the island. Make sure to always wear a helmet, and see to it that your international driving license is in order. While in Krabi or Ao Nang, things to do will be many, like visiting Railay Beach and limestone islands. With regards to accommodation, the likes of Avani Ao Nang Cliff Krabi Resort are some of the best places to look out for.
