Windsurfing

Windsurfing can be a high-intensity sport or done at your leisure. Either way, it is worthy of an attempt when vacationing in the Maldives. It is a sport even newcomers can try without getting intimidated, because the water surrounding the islands, will be calm and gentle. What is mainly required is active wind strength and some basic swimming skills, and of course, the preliminary preparations will be made available via the respective accommodations. The most suitable time for the sport is between May and October when wind strength gains some momentum over the Indian Ocean.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing has become quite a popular activity in beachside destinations! The kite gets attached to a mini surfboard that propels its rider over the water. However, unlike surfing, significant waves are not essential for kite surfing and can be accomplished under numerous weather conditions. A proper dose of wind power is all one needs to kitesurf. Although the Maldives cannot be classified as a location with strong winds, from May until October, conditions become amiable for the sport. This is when the Maldivian oceans become ideal for kite surfing and a good time for novices to master their kitesurfing skills.

Scuba diving

The Maldives travel industry caters to diving enthusiasts unlike any other place on earth due to the sheer number of amazing locations found all across the islands. The mild seas surrounding the archipelago have the perfect conditions for attracting a large array of aquatic life, like sea turtles, dolphins, eels and grey sharks. Being in the Maldives is a superb opportunity to take diving lessons as well, for those who are new to the sport. Most of the resorts will have all the facilities available for their guests, with PADI-approved diving centres and instructors ready to conduct preliminary courses for guests who want to learn the sport while on holiday.

2

Snorkelling

If scuba diving is too daunting, nothing beats snorkelling when it comes to underwater exploration, as it is less demanding than diving and just as enjoyable. Like diving, most accommodation options in the Maldives will be fully supplied for snorkelling. Furthermore, an in-house reef is available in most of the top resorts, allowing one to go snorkelling anytime one wishes. Many snorkelling liveaboards are also available, so you get to tour around the archipelago, visiting the best snorkelling/diving sites out there for a real Maldives adventure.

3

Kayaking

This is a fun and relaxing sport and is perfectly suited to the calming waters surrounding the Maldivian islands. The still waters allow one to steer the water with ease and immerse in the experience. It is also a fun mini-workout and can be done, solo, or in a pair. Some kayaks have a translucent bottom to let you see what's transpiring in the sea beneath you. However, do exercise fundamental precautions like putting on a life jacket and wearing sunscreen. Also, wear a wide-brim hat, and sunglasses and take sufficient water with you!
