The second capital of ancient Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa Kingdom rose to significance between the 11th to 13th centuries. Situated in the north-central province, Polonnaruwa is full of ancient ruins of historical importance and archaeological value which must be viewed to appreciate this great city.

1

The majestic Royal Palace

Built between 1153 to 1186 during the reign of King Parakrama Bahu, this majestic Royal Palace had been an icon of grandeur in that ancient era. Although what remains today are only a few of the walls, it had been a massive construction measuring 31 metres by 13 metres containing 07 storeys, a marvellous architectural and mechanical feat in that era which has made this Royal Palace a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the must-see places to visit in Polonnaruwa. Experience the sense of awe when you see it close.

2

The unique Kumara Pokuna

Also meaning the Royal Bath or pool, this creatively designed pool measures 44 feet by 38 feet at surface level and diminishing towards the bottom has a flight of steps providing access to it. The water to the pool had been brought underground from the moat to the kingdom and fed through the dragon-mouthed conduits fixed on the inner walls of the pool, thus showcasing the superiority of architecture and design.

3

The awe-inspiring audience hall

The audience hall is a masterpiece of masonry from that era and much of it is still preserved and is often visited by guests from Hotel Sudu Araliya and many other hotels. Beginning with the beautiful moonstone at the entrance, the frieze of elephants, each one in a different pose and the lions at the top of the steps showcase the superior skills of the workmen. The audience hall is believed to have been used for hearings of petitions from the elite and to meet any dignitaries by the King.

4

Sacred Vatadage

This circular relic chamber is said to have been constructed to have a safe and secure place to house Lord Buddha's tooth relic, thus this sacred erection had been done with care and reverence and carried historical importance. Vatadage is an ideal example of a Bubbukakara or bubble-shaped stupa in Sri Lanka.

6

The amazing Gal Vihara

This is one of the most significant Buddhist Shrines built by King Parakramabahu. Featuring 04 statues of Lord Buddha carved entirely out of rock, each statue having a different pose. One depicts a seated image on a lotus flower, the second one is a smaller seated statue, the third is in a standing position whilst the last one is a reclining statue of Lord Buddha.

Parakrama Samudraya

Also meaning sea of King Parakrama was a conception by King Parakramabahu who believed in not wasting a single droplet of rain but preserving and using rainwater to harvest extensive fields of paddy cultivation in the ancient days. The much-revered tank continues to serve over 18,000 acres of paddy and other agricultural fields to his day. Enjoy witnessing this massive man-made tank resembling an ocean.
