5 Important Facts to Know Before Visiting Abu Dhabi - Keep these in mind!

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE is a thriving city with plenty of attractions to keep any traveller entertained. However, there are a few important facts one should know before venturing into the Arabian Kingdom.

1

Cultural rules

UAE is a Muslim country and is administered according to religious laws; thus, cultural opinions are in stark contrast to the west. Regardless of gender, stick to modest attire that doesn't expose the skin unnecessarily. Clothes should conceal both legs and arms.

One should also be mindful of their conduct in public! PDA is to be avoided when out and about. Apart from holding hands (even that should be limited), any other public affection is prohibited. Big penalties, confinement, and deportation will ensue if you blatantly disregard their cultural norms. Homosexuality is prohibited. It is a criminal offence in Abu Dhabi according to Islamic law; so, one should be discreet if visiting the city.

2

Prescription medicines and banned items

Indispensable items such as medicines should have their prescriptions and brand names. It is best to have the labels of all the drugs stating their components. The country adopts a no-tolerance anti-drug rule, even medication containing narcotics substances like codeine will be confiscated and charged if brought in large amounts without a prescription. The death sentence is in full force for illegal trading of drugs, so be conscious of everything you take into the state and be watchful of your hand baggage in transit. Any food items with pork as an ingredient or its by-products will not be allowed into the UAE and will be impounded by the immigration authorities. The same rule goes for non-Islamic religious reading material, jewellery, and statues.

3

The climate

The desert climate can be brutal, so don't underestimate it! Summer is from July to August, and the temperature skyrockets to 106F. The ideal time for travelling will be in the winter from December until February when the temperature goes down to about 60F. So, it would be prudent to carry a hat, scarf, a pair of sunglasses and sunscreen. The winter is the most suitable period to visit, but the prices of hotels and flights would soar during this time. The shoulder period from May until September can also be an option with many accommodations and airlines offering discounts. You may try options like Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara as well.

4

Dress code for mosques

Ladies must cover their hair when entering a mosque, so bring along a few headscarves! One should also avoid wearing close-fitting garments, like stretch and yoga pants, body-hugging tops and dresses. Wear loose clothing, such as kaftans, light cotton trousers, tops, flowy long dresses and skirts to keep in line with the dress code and to beat the heat. Men should also desist from wearing sleeveless clothes and those that expose the knees and legs.

5

Alcohol regulations

Alcohol is served only in licensed clubs and resorts in Abu Dhabi. If consuming alcohol, it is best to indulge in the privacy of your accommodation and exercise moderation at all costs. Alcohol purchased duty-free can be brought into the country but should not exceed 4 litres. Drinking in public is frowned upon, and misbehaving inebriated tourists will be taken into custody and charged!
