5 Things to Know Before Visiting Laos - Be one step ahead!

Laos is a landlocked country with a rich cultural heritage and incredible attractions. It is one of those rare gems in Southeast Asia that has not yet given way to an influx of tourists! Here are a few safety measures you can take to make your trip enjoyable and safe.

1

Landmine Safety

A considerable number of travellers are apprehensive about visiting Laos because of landmines, as it was one of the world's most landmine-infested countries in the past. But it's been a long time since any active wars took place and the landmines have been systematically removed, especially in and around tourist attractions. However, if you decide to venture away from the tourist trail, you have to exercise caution. Make sure to research heavily into any far-flung areas you may be travelling to and get local feedback before heading off to anyplace alone. It is also best that travellers refrain from wearing and bringing expensive jewellery to avoid any unnecessary attention and temptation. Although Laos may seem like an isolated place, it is only a quick flight from Bangkok in case of an emergency.

2

Food hygiene and water

When travelling in Laos, you have to be careful of the water you drink – never drink off the tap as there is a high risk of water contamination. Drinking water should always be heated thoroughly to a boiling point. Also, make sure to use boiled water for brushing your teeth and for ice cubes. Fresh cow's milk is not pasteurised in Laos, and that too should be boiled before consumption. Or you can use powdered or canned milk like evaporated or condensed milk available at supermarkets instead.
Keep away from dairy products made from unboiled milk and eat only thoroughly cooked meats.

3

Vaccination

If visiting Laos, check your immunisation history, especially for Hepatitis E, B and Japanese encephalitis, which are recurrent in Laos. If not, get a booster dose to ensure you are properly vaccinated. Dengue fever can also be common with the rains, so make sure to take plenty of mosquito repellents and wear clothing that covers the legs and arms to minimise exposure.

4

Currency in Laos

The currency is called the Lao kip. Laos has predominantly a cash-based culture, although ATMs are available in most parts of the country. Credit cards are acceptable at high-end shops catering to tourists, most restaurants and top resorts. But carry money with you at all times, just to be on the safe side! When exchanging money in major cities. Do it slowly and mindfully – don't forget to tally your money then and there to get the right amount. A hotel in Luang Prabang, like that of Avani+ Luang Prabang, is among the best accommodation options to choose from.

5

Motorcycle safety

In Laos, you can't ride a bike without a proper license – even if the rental owner does not request proof from you, authorities can stop you and ask for your papers. Travelling on your bike is undoubtedly the ideal way to travel around Laos. Rentals can be located in Vientiane, Pakse, Vang Vieng, and Luang Prabang. The most popular bikes available for hire are Honda Baja and dual-purpose motorbikes. The grade of the bikes will vary, so examine the selection well before deciding on one. Laos has unpaved, and paved roads, but you will find touring the country on a bike easy.
Helmets are mandatory and essential for your safety, and also make sure that you have good insurance that covers road mishaps.
