Wonderful Places to Visit in Charming Galle Fort, Sri Lanka – Be lulled by the waves, inspired by the history

Arriving in Galle on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, one cannot miss this quaint Fort steeped in history standing with the hum of the mighty Indian Ocean beside it. Built by the Portuguese in 1588 and fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century this popular site entices visitors who flock to Galle.

1

The Iconic Galle Lighthouse

Being the oldest lighthouse on the island, history dates back to 1650 when it was an old oil lamp that guided sailors onto the shore. The lighthouse witnessed today was built in 1848 by the British. This graceful pearly white structure stands out as it rises at the far end at Utrecht Bastion point at the Galle Fort. Being an operational lighthouse, although visitors are not permitted inside, this is a must-see attraction especially at sunset as you get a mesmerizing view of the lighthouse as well as the ocean from Utrecht Bastion Point as enjoyed by visitors from Galle hotels.

2

Walk over the historical Ramparts

Not far from the lighthouse, you can easily walk along the ramparts as scores of locals and visitors do. What is unique about walking here is that you will walk in the footsteps of Portuguese, Dutch and British soldiers from another era as they watched out for invasions from water. The entire ramparts can take a little over 2 hours to cover if you are keen to do it and be treated to spectacular views of the ocean.

3

Indulge yourself on Pedlers Street

At the heart of Galle Fort lies this exciting and intriguing street lined with restaurants, boutiques, cafes and galleries and more. A perfect place to lose yourself for some hours such as a heavenly spa treatment, shop for clothes and souvenirs and indulge your taste buds with a variety of dishes and beverages on offer as most guests from Fortress Resort and Spa tend to do to experience the old world charm and atmosphere here.
04. Admire the charming Dutch Reformed Church
Having been built in 1755, this ancient church happens to be one of the oldest Protestant Churches still in use in Sri Lanka. Also called Groote Kerk the architecture of this elegant building from the exterior to the interior depicts the skill of the designers and workmen. Step into the calm oasis to witness the grandeur of the church from within.

4

The historic Galle Clock Tower

This tall and impressive clock tower at the Galle Fort is unmistakable, being a landmark and timekeeper since 1833. Constructed using the funds raised by the locals who lived in the Galle Fort then, this clock tower was dedicated to recognizing the skill and benevolence in relieving human suffering by the famous surgeon of that time Dr P D Anthonisz, the clock itself too has been a gift from a grateful patient.

Colours that add to the coastline

Just as much as attractions abound within the Galle Fort, on the little coves just outside of the Fort are a bevvy of colourful fishing boats adding colour to the Galle Fort. This offers a great chance to talk to the local fisher folk as they mend their nests in preparation for the next day and take out their catch for the day. Feel the local vibes and appreciate their contribution.
