Top attractions in and around Matale – Exploring a village

Located in the heart of Sri Lanka's central hills, Matale is a very urbanised city. Here are some attractions you need to visit in and around the Matale area!

1

Meemure

A location that looks right out of a postcard, Meemure is soon gaining popularity amongst the locals and tourists. This hidden gem sits on the border of the Kandy-Matale districts, with a population of only 400 people. The highlight of Meemure, apart from the beautiful landscapes, is that there is no cellular connectivity. Although Meemure is a short drive from Matale's city centre, the drive is worthwhile. Hidden amongst the mountains, this quaint village is ideal for camping. All you need to do is find the best spot to set up your camping tents and enjoy the bliss of being disconnected from the rest of the world!

Sembuwatte Lake

If you're looking to escape the busy urban chaos of Matale town, head to Sembuwatte lake! Located within the Matale district itself, this quiet area boasts a man-made lake, made of natural spring water. The highlight of this location is that it sits cosily beside Campbell's Lane Forest Reserve, which gives it an idyllic feel. Sembuwatte Lake is a popular spot for hiking and picnics, so you can pack your favourite snacks before heading to the lake. The main role of the lake, apart from being an attraction, is processing electricity for the villages in the vicinity.

3

Knuckles Mountain Range

Looking to hike, and up for a challenge? The knuckles Mountain Range looms with green mountains and is a favourite hiking spot for many in central Sri Lanka. Listed as a World Heritage Conservation Area, most of the mountain range remains untouched. Featuring 34 peaks, the formation of the range is said to resemble a clenched fist, hence the name! Referred by the locals as 'Dumbara Kanduvetiya', which translates to misty mountains. This vibrant biodiversity zone brims with streams, waterfalls, meandering roads and grasslands. A fun fact about the Knuckles mountain range is that although it covers only 0.03% of the country's area, 34% of Sri Lanka's endemic vegetation is found within the area.

Aluvihare Rock Temple

For a more religious and spiritual spot to visit, this sacred Buddhist temple is a stop you must make. Also known as Matale Alu Viharaya, this temple dates back to the 3rd century BC. King Devanampiyatissa is said to have built the dagoba and planted a bo sapling. Within the temple, there are numerous interesting religious paintings, stupas and caves. Remember to be respectful when visiting Buddhist temples, as they are held in very high regard by locals, who follow the religion.
