Best Places to Visit in Colombo – The island city never looked better

Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka, is a wonderful example of how the island's rich history and culture can be harmoniously blended with 21st-century conveniences. The colonial past of the city also contributes to the city's multifaceted past.

1

The immense Lotus Tower

Colombo's newest attraction is also among the city's most popular tourist spots. The Colombo Lotus Tower is the tallest freestanding structure in South Asia, and from its observation deck, tourists can take in breathtaking panoramas of the city and the ocean beyond.
Shopping, a fine dining restaurant that spins 360 degrees, and indoor and outdoor observation decks can all be found in the tower, which also houses a large amount of telecommunications equipment. Even from a distance, the structure is a sight to behold; it is completely illuminated by LEDs, and it features nightly light shows that change to reflect the seasons.

The National Museum of Colombo

The National Museum of Colombo, or Sri Lanka National Museum as it is formally known, is the country's official museum and will take you on a fascinating tour through Sri Lanka's rich cultural history. It's the kind of museum where you can see everything from paintings to weapons to ancient crafts. All the way from prehistoric times to the current day, the country's cultural and natural history are on display.
If you are staying at the Mandarina Colombo, you will be just a 10-minute cab ride from the museum and the best part is once you are done, you will be able to easily visit some of the best restaurants in Colombo with ease.

The Planetarium

The one and only planetarium in Sri Lanka, visiting it might be an interesting break from the heat. The University of Colombo is home to a planetarium. Out front of Independence Square is the public access point which leads to 570 seats in the vast theatre, and the ceiling is a dome upon which the stars and constellations of the night sky are projected.
Not only are the displays and events fascinating, but the building itself is an architectural marvel and an absolute must for your Instagram feed. Elements of the lotus flower patterns that can be found at the planetarium can also be found in the most well-known modernist churches from Liverpool, England, to Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Vihara Mahadevi Park

Colombo's Central Park is one of the city's few sizable green spaces, where residents and visitors may stretch out and take in some fresh air, or seek shade from the scorching sun. This park features a small zoo and several fountains for your enjoyment. The playground is great for the kids. The Cenotaph and the national library are both inside the park's boundaries.
The park also houses the tallest cast metal Buddha Statue in the country, which stands at a towering 15 feet in height. The park was once known as Victoria Park but has since been renamed in honour of one of the country's old monarchs.

National Zoological Gardens of Sri Lanka

Dehiwala is home to the city's sprawling Colombo Zoo. The zoo's mission extends well beyond only exhibiting animals; it also promotes conservation and the well-being of the animals. It's one of the oldest in Asia and it houses a wide variety of animals. Animal keepers put on shows at the zoo every day and this is a must-visit if you have children with you!
