5 Important Steps in the E Coat Paint Process

E coating is a highly sought after type of metal finishing. Read on to learn about the steps involved in the e coat paint process.

1

1. Pretreatment

The first step in the e coat paint process is much the same as the first step in any metal finishing process. If you want a coating to be free of blemishes and imperfections, you need to make sure that the surface is clean before you begin. So, pretreatment begins with a thorough surface cleaning. Once that’s done, a phosphate is applied to prepare the surface for the rest of the e coating process.

2. Submersion

After the metal is properly pretreated, it is submerged in a bath made up of approximately 80-90% deionized water and 10-20% paint solids.

3. Electric Charge

The next step in the e coat paint process accounts for the name “electrocoating.” An electric charge is applied to the bath in which the part is submerged. The charge causes the paint solids suspended in the solution to become attracted to the metal surface, effectively coating the part.

4. Post-Rinsing

Once the part is removed from the bath, it needs to be rinsed in order to remove excess paint residue, which is called “drag out.” Drag out can be added back into the bath to be used for coating more parts, which makes e coating a very low-waste process.

5. Curing

The final step in the e coat paint process is curing. The coated part is placed in a curing oven and baked until the coat sets. The result is a highly durable finish.
