Local dishes you must try when you are in Koh Samui – A unique gastronomic experience

Food easily decides whether a vacation was worth it or not, and for this reason, when in Thailand, you must allow your taste buds to experiment and explore!

1

Pad Thai

You've probably heard of Pad Thai before, and even tried it, but nothing comes close to the authentic Pad Thai you find in Thailand. In all honesty, your trip to Thailand is incomplete without a taste of this stir-fried noodle dish. You'll find Pad Thai at almost every restaurant and in many a Koh Samui resort, the likes of Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort. Street vendors posted at night markets add rice spices, giving the noodles a crispy texture, coupled with the nutty flavour of the peanuts and soft vegetables.

2

Mango Sticky Rice

If there's a single dessert you need to try during your time in Thailand, it has to be mango sticky rice! A simple dish, nothing too complex, but full of flavour that's going to make you want more with each spoon. The main components of this dish are glutinous rice, fresh mango slices and coconut milk. This is an exotic desert, and the addition of coconut milk only makes it better!

3

Papaya Salad

This dish is not for those who have a hard time tolerating spice, as it can get just a little too spicy. A perfectly balanced mix of sauces, chillies and herbs create the spicy papaya salad, which is often eaten as a refreshing snack or starter. Easily found in shops in Koh Samui, the taste of papaya will surprise you.

4

Coconut rice

Another delicious dessert to add to your list: Grilled Coconut Rice, which is prepared with sticky steamed rice filled with coconut milk, which is then wrapped neatly with a banana leaf and grilled. You can never go wrong with this delicacy.

5

Tom Yum Goong

This dish is for lovers of seafood and spice! What makes this dish one of a kind are the flavours and ingredients such as lemongrass, lime leaves, coconut, fish sauce, chilli and galangal. Albeit slightly on the spicy side, you're not going to want to miss this one!

6

Khao Pad

Also known as Thai fried rice, this dish is said to originate from central Thailand. The ingredients to make this dish are quite straightforward, jasmine rice, eggs, garlic, oyster and soy sauce, salt and a pinch of sugar. Nevertheless, the smoky taste of the rice is because it is cooked in a very warm wok, which beautifully combines the ingredients.

7

Chicken Satay

If you enjoy your meat, then chicken satay is a delicacy for you. The flavourful elements used to create chicken satay will want you looking forward to more, and these skewers are one of a kind! You can choose from a wide variety of meats, such as fish, pork, beef or chicken. The ideal accompaniment for the skewers is peanut sauce, and you'll be craving it as the days pass by!
