Top 6 Most Common Sheet Metal Stamping Techniques

There are many different techniques for sheet metal stamping, each with its own unique purpose. Read on to learn about 6 of the most common.

1

1. Blanking

One of the most basic sheet metal stamping techniques is called blanking. Blanking involves cutting a piece of sheet metal (using a die and press) into a desired shape. The resulting part may be the finished product (then called a fully finished blank) or it may be just one step along the way.

2. Piercing

Piercing is another sheet metal stamping technique and it is basically the same process as blanking, but instead of keeping the stamped out bit (or the blank, if you will), the fabricator keeps the part that now has holes punched in it.

3

3. Bending

Bending is a sheet metal stamping technique that is used to make flat pieces of metal 3 dimensional.

4

4. Flanging

Flanging is essentially just a more specialized version of the bending technique where a piece of metal is bent specifically into a 90 degree angle.

5. Drawing

Drawing is one of the most complicated sheet metal stamping processes. During the drawing process, tension is used to “draw” the sheet metal into a cavity, creating a depression. Drawing is used to make all kinds of products, like sinks, oil pans for vehicles, all kinds of cooking equipment, and so on and so forth.

6. Coining

In the coining process, dies are used to stamp sheet metal into specific shapes without actually putting holes in them like you would see in piercing or blanking.
