5 Fun Things to Know About Singapore – Unlock the secrets of the gateway to the east

Singapore is by no means a big country, but it's a fairly sized city that is hiding many secrets for the adventurous traveller to discover. If you do find your way to this modern metropolis, spend a day, and visit the famous sights, and then step off the beaten track and explore the real Singapore.

1

Overview

Singapore is easily one of the richest countries in Asia, but you might be surprised to find out that it's one of the richest places in the world. So, it probably won't come as a surprise to see all the big brands you would expect setting up shop in the sprawling luxurious malls that criss-cross Singapore's main business district. It is a fun experience to get lost in these gigantic malls and come out on a street, miles from where you started, but you can probably do that elsewhere in the world.

2

The shopping

For a truly unique shopping experience, to find affordable fashion, arts and crafts, one-off souvenirs, and authentic street food, you need to head to the markets. Head to Bugis market if it's clothes that you're looking for. There has been an art school revival of the flea market scene, inspired by the legendary Thieves Market of Sungei Road, be sure to find out where these markets pop up while you're visiting the city.

3

The beaches

Singapore probably won't top the list when it comes to beach destinations in Southeeast Asia. However, there are a few beaches, which are quite worth the visit. Changi beach is one of the most famous; the palm-lined 3km stretch of white sand and clear water offer a perfect setting for a sunset barbecue.
Sentosa has three beaches: Tanjong, Siloso and Palawan. If you want something family-friendly and not so touristy, Palawan is the place to go. It's a favourite hangout for expats and popular activities include beach volleyball, cable skiing, windsurfing, and paddle-boarding. And while in Singapore, don't miss out on the island's top-notch beach-club culture.

4

The Islands

In Singapore, top things to do will vary quite wildly depending on what you like to do. But as long as you're staying at one of the centrally located hotels like Pan Pacific Singapore, you'll have the option of making plans on the go and being spontaneous. On your visit, try to make some time to go island-hopping. Singapore has some lovely, picturesque islands off its southern coast, just 30 minutes away from the city and accessible by ferry. The most famous of these are St John's and Kusu Island. Spend a peaceful day swimming, hiking, fishing or simply revelling in the laid-back atmosphere on offer.

5

The suburbs

To get a feel of the essence of what gives Singapore its unique identity, you need to experience its multiculturalism. And to do that the right way, you need to explore the city's suburbs. Kampong Glam, a Malay Muslim enclave and Little India are must-visits, but you should also make it a point to look around Duxton Hill and get a feel for the country's colonial past. However, start your day off with breakfast at Tiong Bahru regardless of whatever else you get up to.
