Crucial Do's & Don'ts When Visiting Abu Dhabi – Understanding the ways to adapt during your time in Abu Dhabi

The dreamscape of supercars, stunning skylines and expensive malls that you are expecting will be all that you will get to experience, however, there is also a slight dose of reality to digest along the way. Learn about what you can and cannot do in this stunning metropolis to have a truly delightful journey!

1

Make sure to dress the part

If you are hoping to easily assimilate into the life of an Emirati, then one of the best things you can do is head to the nearest mall and get yourself into some Emirati clothes. Whether this means that you purchase a Kandura or Abaya, it is one of the best ways to join the masses when you are spending time outside the resort.
Something to keep in mind as well is that Abu Dhabi is not as liberal as Dubai, so it is strongly recommended that you wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, regardless of gender, when outside of the resorts at the very least.

2

Can you consume alcohol in Dubai?

While many people often visit with the impression that it will be unlikely that they will get to enjoy a couple of cocktails at sundown, this is far from the reality of the on-the-ground situation. Aside from Sharjah, you can drink alcohol in any of the other Emirates in the UAE.
If you are mindful of the fact that you can only drink in specific locations and are able to maintain a civilized decorum, then you will be able to enjoy a few margaritas without much drama. For those who are staying at a villa in Abu Dhabi such as the Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Yamm Villa Resort be sure to ask the staff in which areas it is acceptable to drink so that you do not get into any trouble or disturb local guests who may be staying at the villa.

3

You can't avoid the sand

No matter how much you try, the sands of Abu Dhabi will be ever-present as you walk around the city or your villa. However, the best recommendation that can be made is to simply embrace it. In fact, you should dive right into and go for a desert safari on jeeps and enjoy the view of the sun glistening off the bronze sand dunes.

4

Take a bite out of their cuisine

No matter who you may be or whatever your reason for visiting Abu Dhabi, it would be a real shame if you were to walk away having never tried a bite of the local cuisines. From local dishes with influences from Lebanon, Egypt and Turkey to Friday brunches at some of Abu Dhabi's best restaurants, a world of delectable flavours awaits.

5

Remember to pack for the weather

It should not surprise you once you land to realise that, whenever you step outside, you will be enveloped with waves of heat. This means that you will not only need to pack accordingly, ideally in light-coloured clothing that is breathable. It also means that you will need to ensure that you are bringing in warm clothes for the colder nights and the cool temperatures indoors.
