How to Explore the Red City of Marrakech and its Excursions - Your Guide to Discovering Marrakech's Top Attractions and

As a unique geographical hub where the Middle East, Africa and Europe converge, Marrakech is no ordinary tourist hub. With a rich history that dates back nearly a thousand years, this bustling ancient metropolis is bordered by the Sahara Desert and is characterised by its pink-hued palaces and busy marketplaces. From uncovering its heritage to enjoying its unforgettable experiences, here's a guide to exploring this cultural heartland in scenic Morocco.

1

Time the Visit

Those who wish to experience the Red City at its finest must time their visit to Marrakech as it only boasts ideal weather conditions during certain times of the year. The best time to holiday in Marrakech usually falls between March and May and then once again from September to November as there's less chance of rain during these periods. Avoid the city during the unbearably hot summer season. The March to May and September to November periods are also easy on the wallet for those on the lookout for hotel bargains. National holidays such as Ramadan and Christmas are not suitable for a getaway in Marrakech as the availability of transport options is unreliable and room rates also skyrocket.

2

Find a Strategic Base

Regardless of the duration of your visit, a conveniently located base is vital to spend a meaningful holiday in the city. Allowing visitors easy access to some of the key attractions in Marrakech, a centrally located base can make travelling around the city a pleasure instead of a time-consuming hassle. Whether you select the Somerset Medini Iskandar Puteri or any similar serviced apartment in Johor Bahru, consider the property's proximity to the main marketplaces and cultural highlights in Marrakech.

3

Hit the Historic Hotspots

A stay in Marrakech would not be complete without touring some of its main palaces, mosques, and fortresses. Stop by the Saadian Tombs, the last resting place of Sultan al-Mansour, built in the 16th century. The mausoleum, with its ornate decorations, is not all there is to explore in this area as it is also near the Kasbah Mosque. A tour of the Badi Palace is another must for first-time visitors as its minbar, spectacular views and reflecting pools are awe-inspiring, to say the least. Located near Badi Palace is the equally captivating Bahia Palace on Avenue Imam El Ghazali. This vast compound, which served as the home of Abu 'Bou' Ahmed, is luxurious in appearance and design.

4

Marvel at Le Jardin Secret

Ranked among Marrakech's most exquisite horticultural points of interest, Le Jardin Secret juts out of a 19th-century palace. This sprawling botanical hub in Medina is among the largest gardens in Marrakech and is divided into two zones. The first section is a picture-perfect representation of a Persian wonderland complete with olive and date trees and rolling lawns. The smaller second section is devoted to exotic plants and a fourfold design. Don't forget to drop by the city's vibrant retail destinations including Souk Smata and Souq Semmarine where bargains and exotic products are not all that are up for grabs.

5

Neighbourhoods of Note

The most popular sightseeing hotspots around the main city are the suburbs of Marrakech, which exude a different cultural identity based on the history of each neighbourhood. Some of the most intriguing areas to visit in this regard include the decidedly French Gueliz, which is also referred to as the European Quarter. Apart from shops and European craft shops, Gueliz is also famed for its restaurants and bars. Mellah or the Jewish Quarter is where the Lazana Synagogue is found while Hivernage is a lush region dedicated to high-end bars, restaurants, and baked brick walls. The verdant gardens and The Royal Theatre in Hivernage are also worth visiting.
