Endemic birds of Sri Lanka – Flight and art in motion await

For the most part, Sri Lanka's 33 endemic bird species occur in the country's rainy zone. Many of these endemic species can be found during the season from November until April. Most of these endemics can be found in the lowlands at the Kithulgala and Sinharaja forest reserves.

1

Ceylon Spurfowl

The deep woodlands of the southern half of the island are home to this rarely seen ground-dwelling species. It's essentially a woodland bird that may be found in the hills up to roughly 2000 meters, but most commonly in the Wet Zone. More often heard than seen, this creature is reticent and reclusive. You may hear its distinctive 'ringing crackling' from a great distance.
This island offers much airborne splendour, and there are plenty of Sri Lanka resorts where you can sit back, relax and enjoy some birdwatching, so if you are looking, the Theme Resorts and Spa is a great place to start.

2

Ceylon Junglefowl

All the way from the ocean level to the highest peaks, this bird can be found in every climatic zone. Although it is shy, it can be fairly docile and acts like a domestic chicken in regions next to woodlands. Despite the fact that this bird may be found in nearly every forest, Sinharaja is the best area to get a good look at it up close.

3

Ceylon Woodpigeons

The Sri Lankan wet zone is home to this lovely huge pigeon. A rare forest pigeon found in highland forests and neighbouring well-wooded habitats; it will also descend to the lower hills on occasion. Although it prefers to spend most of its time among the treetops, it is never afraid to descend to the ground in search of food. If you are looking to get a glimpse of this bird, it is recommended to head to the Horton Plains and Sinharaja forest to visit it.

4

Ceylon Green pigeon

Smaller in size than the other green pigeons, this species can be found across the low country and up into the mountains, where it can reach elevations of roughly 1000 meters. It can be found in forests, well-wooded farmland, and even private gardens. This pigeon is an arboreal pigeon, which means it lives in small groups and travels frequently. It can be found in Kithulgala, Sinharaja, and Udawalawe, among other places.

5

Ceylon Hanging Parrot

Small and brightly coloured, this parrot can be found all throughout the mountains up to a height of around 1300 meters. It is also found in the low country rainy zone. With a short tail like all other Sri Lankan parakeets, except this one is green. A common little bird that can be found in forests, gardens, and plantations of all sizes. Lives alone or in small groups most of the time. To see this bird, head to Kandy, Kithulgala, or Sinharaja.

6

The Red-Faced Malkoha

Another tree-dweller with a strong affinity for the trees this bird is most commonly found in dense, sparsely distributed wet zone forests, with a few exceptions in the region's tall, riparian forests. This distinctive huge bird has a bright red beak and throat. These feeding flocks are normally made up of two or three couples, but it's not uncommon to observe more than one. The best spot to see this bird is Sinharaja.
