Local Beverages in Abu Dhabi – A taste of the Middle East!

Abu Dhabi is not a relaxed emirate like Dubai. This does not mean, however, that you cannot have a memorable time! Here are some local beverages that would help to quench your thirst after a long day of exploration.

1

Arabic Coffee

Arabic coffee is an important mark of hospitality within the Arabic world and societies; therefore, trying this out is a must! If you're a lover of coffee, Arabic coffee is bound to become one of your favourites. The manner in which this is made is also rather unique, where the beans are roasted very lightly over a fire and pounded on a pestle and mortar. The coffee grounds are then added to a large coffee pot known as 'dallah', after which water is added and the pot is once again placed over a fire. The coffee is then allowed to brew before it's poured into smaller cups! Known as 'Gahwa', Arabic coffee is served to every guest visiting a house. This is a beverage loved by locals, tourists, and expats alike and you'll find it quite easily at any of Abu Dhabi best restaurants and served at properties such as Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara.

2

Karak Chai

Chai or tea is a beverage loved by many. The term 'karak' means strong, so karak chai is strong tea! This beverage is a very rich blend of milk and tea, which has become a staple in the lives of locals in UAE. You'll find karak chai stalls anywhere in the city, especially on crowded streets. Sometimes, the tea is served with some dates, which makes it a great combo!

3

Laban

After a long day of exploring Abu Dhabi under the hot sun, the best way to cool down is with some Laba, a yoghurt-based drink. This drink is much loved by kids and it's said to keep you cool during the warm summer months while also boosting the immune system. Laban is said to be packed with vitamins, calcium, and protein, so not only is it tasty, but it is also the best healthy drink! You will find supermarkets packed with laban, and it is also served by many restaurants. You're likely to find numerous different brands selling laban, but rest assured, they all taste great!

4

Sulaimani tea

Are you a lover of all things minty? You have to check out Sulaimani tea, as it is a perfect mix of lemon and mint. After a heavy meal, this tea is ideal as it is sweet and tangy. The tea comprises lemon, mint leaves, cardamom, and loose tea. You can try this tea out at any local café or tea shop! Sulaimani tea is usually served in a tiny, ornate glass cup with a mint leaf on top, and you're bound to want more and more of this. It's said that a warm cup of Sulaimani tea helps with digestion after a heavy meal.

Jallab

After a long day of walking under the Middle Eastern blistering sunshine, a huge glass of Jallab is the perfect way to cool off. A fruit syrup, made from dates, grape molasses and rose syrup – it's a unique combination! Jallab is also a popular drink during Ramadan.
