5 Ways to Discover Abu Dhabi's Ancient History – Looking back

The Abu Dhabi you see today is a glitzy metropolis. However, it was once an ancient city holding a lot of history. Here are the best ways to discover the history of Abu Dhabi.

1

The forts

As with any ancient city, the forts are where a lot of history lies. When in Abu Dhabi, you must make some time to visit forts such as Al Jahili Fort, which is said to have been built all the way back in 1891, in order to defend the city. Another historic fort palace you should add to your itinerary is the Qasr Al Muwaiji, which was the former council of the Royal Family. In fact, this was where the president of the United Arab Emirates was born, and where he spent the first couple of years of his life at. Remember to be respectful when visiting these forts, as they hold a lot of history and significance.

2

Within the city

You do not have to go too far to discover the history of Abu Dhabi. Therefore, if you're staying in Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara, one of the well-known resorts in Abu Dhabi, you don't necessarily have to travel for hours on end. One of the main places to go would be the Qasr Al Hosn national monument, which was built all the way back in the 1700s. This is the ancestral home of the Royal Al Nahyan family, and the monument now serves as a national archive.

3

Traditional crafts

The art of a country speaks a lot about its history, and this is the same for Abu Dhabi/United Arab Emirates. If you're a lover of art and history, free up some time to visit the artisans behind the many traditional Emirati crafts. Within the Al Hosn complex, you will find the House of Artisans, where you can witness stunning artwork and meet the artisans to learn more. The art of Sadu is one you can learn about, which is a form of weaving using wool from goats, sheep, and camels to create unique geometric designs.

4

Al Ain

A little outside of Abu Dhabi, you will come across Al Ain, which is a 90-minute drive away. This city holds plenty of historical and cultural significance and was once occupied by Bedouin tribes for several years. Al Ain oasis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a perfect spot for families. Walk through the thick canopy of trees and nature, exploring the ancient irrigation system and much more.

5

Bani Yas Island

If you want to explore history and culture while also squeezing in an island getaway, Sir Bani Yas Island won't disappoint. The oldest written accounts of the island were in 1590, but it is said that it also boasts Late Stone Age and Bronze age roots. The island was also home to a church and monastery back in the 7th and 8th centuries, which were discovered in 1992.
