How to Enjoy Your Trip to Dickwella and Hiriketiya Beach in Sri Lanka- Sri Lanka’s southern coastal gems!

The southern coastal beaches in Dickwella and the bay in Hiriketiya are fast becoming meccas for beach lovers and surfers alike. But these are less crowded than spots like Mirissa and Unawatuna. The crystal-clear waters, and the beautiful surroundings are sure to lull you into a peaceful daydream. Check out ways to make your trip even better!

1

Surfing at Hiriketiya

Hiriketiya has become quite the surfing hotspot and has a palpable hipster vibe around the place. There are several yoga centres and cafes, serving all kinds of delicious food, with smoothie bowls and plant-based options. The bay at Hiriketiya creates some of the finest waves, perfect for beginners to start learning the sport! The natural beauty of the place is just stunning! Hiri Beach, as it is known by the locals, is made for surfers – the perfect place to learn the sport! You can encounter plenty of surfer dudes strutting their stuff and waiting for the next perfect wave. An hour’s lesson may cost around 3500 rupees and a beginner’s board and a wetsuit are provided with the price. Seasoned surfers can find plenty of shops on the beach with surfboards for rent – an hour might cost just around 500 rupees!

Yoga Lessons

What better way to relax all those stretched-out muscles from surfing than to slow down and relax your mind and body with yoga? Yoga sessions are available at the Salt House, Dots Bay House, and Jasper House. The three spots are within walking distance of Hiriketiya Bay. Yoga classes are held each day from 7 am to 4 pm. Jasper House conducts lessons from 8 am to 5 pm. And each lesson is 1500 Rupees in most places.

3

Dondra Light House

The Dondra Light House is the southernmost location on the island. The lighthouse is spectacular and just beautiful. Although visitors are not allowed inside the structure, you can sit and watch the amazing views around you. The palm trees swaying on the beach nearby and the refreshing breeze around you would lull you into a meditative trance. If you fancy a dip, bring some change of clothes along, because the fantastic Talalla Beach is nearby as well.

Other beaches in Dickwella

The coast at Dickwella has many hidden gems waiting to be discovered. The best way to scour the coastline is to hire a scooter and travel across the town to uncover the perfect spot. However, be careful if you are not a seasoned swimmer; the waves are quite rough in these areas. Towards the west of Dickwella, there are many restaurants, hotels, beach beds, swings and spas. Other beaches to look out for in the neighbouring towns includes Blue Beach, 1.5 kilometres away from Dickwella. You can find many a Dickwella resort in these parts as well; the likes of Dickwella Resort & Spa are places to look out for!

5

Talalla Beach

This beautiful stretch of coastline is about 20 minutes away from Dickwella. The beach is secluded and quiet and it is unlike the major beach destinations such as Arugam Bay. It is almost certain that you will have the beach all to yourself to enjoy. However, it is not so desolate that you won’t find some nice hotels and restaurants nearby if you fancy a stayover!

6

Secret Beach

Secret Beach is probably the most picturesque beach area you will find on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. It is just 30 minutes away from Hiriketiya Bay, and it’s quite a task to locate the beach itself. You won’t find any restaurants or many hotels in this region either. However, the golden sand and emerald blue waters of the beach will perfectly compensate for that!
