While there are countless things to do in the Maldives, that are perfect for all kinds of travellers from around the world, nothing beats spending time in the impossibly blue and gin-clear waters of this tropical archipelago. Here is a list of fun and thrilling water-based activities to do during your holiday in paradise!

Snorkelling

A key attraction of the Maldives is its thriving and abundant marine life, and the best way to really take it in is by a session or several sessions of snorkelling. The best thing about this activity is that it's doable in almost all resorts including the likes of Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences. If you are lucky, you will be able to simply jump in from your water bungalow or villa and get right to it. While you can snorkel everywhere in the archipelago if you are keen on taking in specific types of marine life, you might have to take a boat to specific locations and pay for the excursion. In terms of visibility, the Maldives has some of the clearest waters on earth, with water temperatures rarely ranging from 20 to 30 Celsius. Apart from vibrant coral plates, you will also get to see colourful reef fish of all sizes and hues along with larger fish like napoleons or moray eels, along with various species of sea turtles such as Hawksbill turtles. If you are feeling a bit adventurous, night snorkelling is also a possibility.

Parasailing

Parasailing too is also among the best things to do in Maldives. This water-based activity involves a person being attached to a special parachute harness which in turn is attached to a speedboat, which will then tow the parachute allowing the person to glide high in the air. The best time of the year to enjoy a spot of parasailing is anywhere between the period of November to April. While best places to parasail include Reethi Beach, Cocoon Beach and Finolhu Beach.

Windsurfing

If you are keen on trying something new that is sure to get your adrenaline pumping is windsurfing. This water-based sport combines sailing and surfing. In a non-motorised water sport, one will get the chance to ride the waves and the wind in style. If you have a great sense of balance and are generally fit, windsurfing is a great activity to try out during your time there.

Jet skiing

This is a popular water-based sport among visiting tourists. There are plenty of independent water sports centres that rent out jet skis which you can hire to jump on oncoming waves to get an adrenaline rush all over your body. If you are not confident enough to ride it by yourself, you can have an instructor ride with you. You will be required to wear a life jacket for added safety.
