7 Things Tourists Should Never Do in Oman, Ever - Don’t forget these tips!

Oman is a great country for travelling and Omanis are very hospitable and welcoming of tourists to their country. But as a guest in the country, one should refrain from doing the below listed things.

1

Wear inappropriate clothes

Omanis are modest and conservative in their ways. Following Muslim culture and values, they typically dress in their traditional outfits in public and in their homes. Men don the dishdasha, a lengthy white or coloured garment, slippers and their customary cap, kumah. Women wear the black abaya over the clothes when in public. Visitors need not wear traditional outfits; however, men and women should wear loose-fitting, well-covered clothes.

2

Make a lot of noise

Omanis have a place named "Majilis" where they get together and talk. Thus, it is uncommon of them to assemble on the roads and talk for everyone to hear. They refrain from this practice so as not to disturb neighbours and the aged. Even at weddings, the couple departs to their home in embellished vehicles, with little noise made. They don't obstruct roads either; it is done to maintain peace and quiet in their surroundings. Visitors should adhere to this practice and not cause any unnecessary disturbance to others.

3

Disrespecting mosques

The mosques in Oman are beautiful; however, they are sacred spaces for Omanis. Some may permit non-Muslim entry to take a tour of the premises, but tourists must respect these places of worship at all times. They should take their shoes off before entering the building, dress appropriately, and women should conceal their heads. One shouldn't talk loudly, laugh or allow children to run and create noise.

4

Mocking traditions

Oman has a rich culture and unique traditions. Visitors must not fault their leader and their history, as they take great pride in both. Also, Omanis have devised habits and practices that mirror their beliefs. From their clothes to hospitality and means of conduct. These aspects represent an authentic and distinctive part of Omani culture and must be valued and appreciated.

5

Rejecting hospitality

Omani Qahwa is the conventional way to invite somebody to partake in coffee, food, and sweets. It could be family, friends, or strangers; Omanis love welcoming others to their homes. Acception the invitation to be at a local's house is one of the best things to do in Muscat if ever given the opportunity. Guests should accept an invitation whenever possible as it makes the Omanis happy when you do. Guests should accept gifts of Omani food, dates and frankincense as well. It makes them feel valued by their guests and ensures guests have relished their time in Oman and their homes.

6

Flirting with women

Omani society values women and treats them with the utmost respect. They do not look kindly at anyone who behaves disrespectfully towards their women and girls.

7

Disrespecting tourist locations

Omani people maintain their country well; tourist sites, streets, souks, and gardens, all spaces are immaculately kept. Visitors must help to maintain the cleanliness by refraining from littering or damaging public property. When looking for accommodation the likes of the Al Falaj Hotel are among the top places to consider while in Muscat.
